Local legend whimsically states, when God was creating the Earth, he grew so cold moving about the ice, he dropped it all in Oymyakon. Life here is undoubtedly challenging. Such frigid temperatures mean frostbite can settle onto exposed skin within minutes, making adequate clothing absolutely imperative. People must layer themselves warmly, donning thermal wears, balaclavas, and heavy boots to navigate the severe winter environment safely. "Even your eyelashes can freeze if you venture outdoors without proper gear," commented one resident.

Some accounts have humorously pointed out moments from what residents refer to as “a pretty warm day” even when it’s merely -55 °C, showing how accustomed the locals are to such severe weather.
Another surprising adaptation involves the local delicacy: raw foal meat. Consumed like deli meat, this vitamin-rich dish is one of the few food sources providing the nutrition often difficult to secure due to absence of fresh fruits and vegetables, which can’t grow under such extreme conditions.
Photography presents another challenge. The never-ending cold can freeze camera lenses, making capturing sweet moments or breathtaking winter vistas quite the feat. What adds to this struggle is the fact even alcoholic beverages like vodka can freeze solid if left unattended outside.

The risks aren’t confined to the cold alone; geopolitical tensions also loom large over the village. Recently, the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has strongly advised against all travel to Russia due to security risks linked to the invasion of Ukraine. According to the FCDO's statement, "The situation in Russia is unpredictable, with local security incidents adding to the risks of any travel."
This advisory includes grave concerns about harassment from Russian security officials, arbitrary enforcement of laws, and limited consular assistance, pushing many to reconsider their plans of visiting even the most extreme locales.
