Las Palmas Readies For Record-Breaking San Silvestre 2024

With over 13,500 participants expected, this year’s San Silvestre promises to be the most inclusive and exciting yet.

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is gearing up for one of the most anticipated events of the year, the San Silvestre 2024 race, set to take place on December 31. A record-breaking number of participants are expected to flood the streets, turning the cityscape vibrant with enthusiasm and solidarity as they bid farewell to the passing year.

This annual charity event, which has become a cherished end-of-year tradition, will kick off at 17:00 from Calle León y Castillo, right outside the Club Natación Metropole. This year's race has already garnered registrations from around 9,000 determined runners, surpassing last year's impressive turnout of 8,150 participants. An additional 4,500 runners are set to join the festivities at the San Silvestre event occurring simultaneously in La Laguna.

The San Silvestre route will cover six kilometers through some of the city’s most iconic landmarks, including Torre Las Palmas and the picturesque Avenida Marítima heading northwards. Participants will run alongside cheering crowds, making the atmosphere both exhilarating and festive, enriched with Christmas lights and music.

To accommodate the massive turnout and to maintain safety, the local government has arranged for specific traffic measures. Road closures will commence at 14:00 hours, with the entire race circuit sealed off by 16:30 to allow for participant safety and smooth operations. Local police will guide detours beginning from the early afternoon, particularly at significant access points like Avenida Marítima.

Travel is also set to be convenient for participants; they can ride free using public transport by simply displaying their race bibs. This initiative aims not only to provide convenience but also to promote sustainable travel methods, encouraging everyone to engage without the usual vehicular hassles.

The race does not only represent athleticism but also embodies community spirit, as all proceeds generated from the event will go directly toward supporting various social initiatives across five prominent nonprofits based in the Canary Islands.

Security measures are of utmost importance, and over 11 personnel will be on hand to oversee the race and manage any emergencies. The event's arrangements have been carefully crafted to assure all participants, irrespective of their level, can safely enjoy the experience.

The San Silvestre is more than just another race; it has evolved as part of the cultural fabric of Las Palmas, where friends, families, and even pets come together to partake, celebrate, and champion important causes.

Following the race, the cleanup crew will be deployed to restore the streets to their usual state. A team of dedicated workers will undertake this from 15:00 to 23:00, ensuring positive community engagement continues beyond the event itself.

This year's San Silvestre is poised to not only meet expectations but to exceed them, creating memorable moments filled with joy and camaraderie. The anticipation for such events, drawing thousands together for charity and fun, shows how imperative gatherings like this are for community bonding.

So as December 31 approaches, participants and spectators alike are reminded to prepare for potential traffic disruptions and to plan accordingly. The San Silvestre is not just about racing; it's about uniting for personal goals and charitable endeavors.
