Led by standout performances, Kyoto reclaims top honors with unmatched teamwork and local pride.

Kyoto’s women’s ekiden team made history on January 12, 2023, by securing their 19th title at the 43rd National Women’s Ekiden, held at Takebishi Stadium. This remarkable achievement not only marked their return to the top after three years but also set a new record for the most victories by any team.

The race comprised nine sections spanning 42.195 kilometers, with Kyoto finishing with an impressive time of 2 hours, 15 minutes, and 26 seconds. The victory was clinched thanks to exceptional performances from the team members, particularly during the pivotal second section, where Yua Sato took the lead, allowing Kyoto to maintain their position for the remainder of the race.

Kawamura, anchoring the final section, expressed her pride and connection to her hometown, stating, "I am glad to have been born in Kyoto." Her finishing time of 31 minutes and 48 seconds was instrumental, as it not only secured the victory but widened the gap between Kyoto and the second-place team, Osaka, by 2 minutes and 26 seconds.

Kyoto's success was not merely about individual performances but rather the culmination of teamwork and strategy, guided by coach Hiroko Watanabe. "It all fell perfectly for us, the best scenario we could have imagined," she remarked, emphasizing the significance of collective effort throughout the event.

The competition was fierce, with Osaka, Fukuoka, and Chiba vying for the top ranks. Osaka finished second, Fukuoka third, and Chiba fourth, showcasing the high level of talent across the participating teams. The race encapsulated the essence of community spirit, with many local supporters cheering for their athletes.

This year’s event highlighted the dedication of Kyoto’s athletes, many of whom are local to the area. The energy from the home crowd served as motivation, turning what could have been pressure from expectations instead transformed the event atmosphere positively. Kawamura reflected on this, mentioning it was reassuring to perform well for those who supported them.

Watanabe noted, "There are so many who have supported us throughout the years; having familiar faces makes a significant difference." This synchronization of support from the community with the athletes’ drive exemplifies why Kyoto has found itself atop the standings repeatedly.

The 43rd National Women’s Ekiden not only celebrates sporting prowess but also reflects the strong ties to heritage and local pride. For the members of the Kyoto team, this victory is not just another title, but also symbolizes their growth and commitment to the sport and their hometown.

Looking forward, the athletes are eager for another season on the track, fueled by their recent success and the knowledge of how far they have come together. With aspirations higher than ever, they plan to continue breaking records and impressing the athletic world as they pursue new challenges.
