Koningsdag 2025 Promises Festivities Across The Netherlands

Cities prepare for a day of celebrations with markets, music, and community events.

As the Netherlands gears up for Koningsdag 2025, a nationwide celebration of King Willem-Alexander's birthday, residents and visitors alike are preparing for a day filled with festivities, markets, and traditional events. This year, Koningsdag falls on Saturday, April 26, and cities across the country are bustling with activities that celebrate Dutch culture and heritage.

In Enschede, local supermarkets will be open on Koningsdag, although some may have adjusted hours. A comprehensive list of these hours was compiled as of April 25, 2025, ensuring that residents can stock up on their favorite orange tompouces and bottles of oranjebitter to enjoy during the celebrations.

Meanwhile, in Westland and Midden Delfland, a variety of events are scheduled to take place. In Naaldwijk, the classic kleedjesmarkt, or flea market, will run from 07:00 to 16:00 along several streets including the Herenstraat and Molenstraat. This market is a beloved tradition, offering locals a chance to sell their second-hand goods while enjoying the festive atmosphere. For safety, the town center will be closed to traffic, encouraging a pedestrian-friendly environment.

Entertainment will abound at the Wilhelminaplein, where visitors can enjoy a range of activities, including a candy and waffle stand, as well as live music throughout the day. The fun continues with games and activities for children, including face painting and a large bouncy castle, ensuring a family-friendly atmosphere.

In 's-Gravenzande, the celebrations kick off the night before with Koningsnacht at Bar de Promenade, featuring performances by Pascal Redeker and DJ Rick Lander. On the actual day, the program includes a children’s parade at 09:15, followed by an aubade at 10:00. Various musical acts and DJs will entertain attendees throughout the day, making it a vibrant celebration.

For those in Honselersdijk, the day starts with a flea market at De Nederhof from 10:00 to 12:30, where locals can browse for treasures among second-hand items. A special Honselse Koningslunch will take place at Wijkcentrum De Hunselaer at 11:00, providing a communal dining experience for those who registered. The afternoon will feature a games session at Sportpark De Strijphorst, highlighting local traditions and engaging activities for children.

Maassluis will also be celebrating with a traditional aubade at 09:00 at the Markt, where the local music association, Kunst en Arbeid, will perform popular Dutch songs. Following the aubade, a children’s flea market will be held from 10:00 to 16:00, allowing kids to sell their toys and crafts without the need for prior registration.

In Hoek van Holland, festivities begin early with a decorated bicycle parade and flag hoisting at Vremdieke at 09:00. The day will feature neighborhood football and traditional Dutch games at Sportpark 'Denoek', along with live music and food trucks at Molenplein, ensuring that there is something for everyone to enjoy.

Delft is also joining in the celebrations with a Koningsnacht festival on April 25, which runs from 18:00 to midnight. The festivities continue on Koningsdag with a designated children's flea market and various activities throughout the inner city. However, it is important to note that sales are restricted to specific areas to maintain accessibility for visitors and emergency services.

As the day approaches, many people are wondering about practical aspects of the celebrations. Questions about supermarket hours, public transport schedules, and weather conditions are common. In Amsterdam, for instance, the public is advised to check local listings for specific store hours, as many supermarkets will adjust their schedules in honor of the holiday.

For those planning to enjoy the festivities, it is advisable to use public transport or bicycles, as many city centers will be closed to vehicle traffic. Bike parking facilities will be available, with extended hours to accommodate the influx of visitors.

As excitement builds for Koningsdag, the vibrant displays of orange decorations and the festive spirit are palpable across the country. From flea markets to live music, each town offers unique ways to celebrate the day, highlighting the rich Dutch culture and community spirit. Whether you’re indulging in traditional treats or participating in local events, Koningsdag is a time for unity, joy, and celebration.

As the Netherlands prepares for this cherished holiday, residents are reminded to embrace the spirit of Koningsdag, enjoying the festivities with family and friends while honoring the traditions that make this day special.
