Katsunori Saito Opens Harappa Stadium For Young Players

The new youth baseball field aims to inspire the next generation of athletes in Hokkaido.

In a heartwarming initiative aimed at nurturing young baseball talent, former Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters pitcher Katsunori Saito officially opened a dedicated youth baseball field named Harappa Stadium in Osatsu Town on May 5, 2025. This new facility is set to become a haven for children to enjoy the sport in a safe and encouraging environment.

With plans to plant turf both inside and outside the stadium, Harappa Stadium is expected to see full-scale use starting this summer. The project is not just a personal dream for Saito, who has long envisioned a space where kids can freely play baseball; it’s also a commitment to the community that has supported him throughout his career.

Saito, who now serves as president of Saito Katsunori Co., Ltd., the company responsible for the stadium's construction and operation, has put considerable thought into this project. He has been actively involved in its development since his retirement from professional baseball, seeking advice from notable figures in the sport.

One of those figures is Hichori Kuriyama, the former manager of the Nippon-Ham Fighters and currently the Chief Baseball Officer (CBO). Saito consulted Kuriyama for insights on building a youth baseball field, specifically referencing Kuriyama’s own successful project, Kurino Ki Farm, which has become a model for youth baseball facilities across Japan.

To ensure that he chose the best location for Harappa Stadium, Saito surveyed approximately 50 potential sites across the country before settling on Osatsu Town. This meticulous approach highlights Saito’s dedication not only to the sport but also to providing a quality facility that meets the needs of young athletes.

The opening of Harappa Stadium has sparked excitement among local residents, who are eager to see the field become a hub for youth baseball. The community's anticipation is palpable as they look forward to seeing children take to the diamond, developing their skills and love for the game.

As the summer approaches, Saito’s vision of a vibrant baseball community is set to come to life, with children running on the freshly laid turf and enjoying the sport in a safe and welcoming environment. This initiative not only honors his legacy as a player but also lays the groundwork for future generations of baseball stars.

In a time when youth sports are facing various challenges, Harappa Stadium stands as a beacon of hope, illustrating the positive impact that dedicated individuals can have on their communities. As Saito himself has said, "I want to create a place where children can enjoy baseball freely." This sentiment embodies the spirit of the new stadium and the opportunities it will provide.
