Junior High Students Reveal Favorite Comedians

Reiwa Roman takes the top spot among male students, followed closely by Sandwichman.

Recent findings from LINE Research have illuminated the comedic taste of male junior high school students across Japan, showcasing their top favorite comedians. The survey, which surveyed 1,030 students, revealed significant preferences with Reiwa Roman leading the pack and Sandwichman firmly securing the second position.

Reiwa Roman, consisting of Matsui Kemuri and Takabi Rabukoruma, emerged at the forefront with 9.1%, gaining remarkable recognition after achieving back-to-back victories at the prestigious M-1 Grand Prix competitions of 2023 and 2024. Their unique blend of humor and intelligent commentary resonates strongly with today's youth.

According to Yuki Fukushima, the writer of the article, "令和ロマンは、慶應義塾大学のお笑いサークル「お笑い道場O-keis」の先輩、松井ケムリさんと後輩、高比良くるま(※高ははしごだか)さんでコンビ結成。" Their success, defined not just by winning competitions but by their ability to connect with their audience, has positioned them as standouts among young comedians.

Following closely, Sandwichman, comprised of Takeshi Tomizawa and Mikio Date, captured 8.9% of the votes. Established since 1998, the duo made their mark by transforming the Japanese comedy scene, exemplified by their remarkable first-place victory at the M-1 Grand Prix after winning from the losers' bracket. Their comedy routines often reflect everyday life, making them relatable to students.

The survey, conducted from January 10 to January 14, 2025, via smartphone web platforms, revealed interesting insights about comedic preferences. Nearly 80% of male junior high school students indicated they enjoyed comedy, illustrating the genre's prominence among youth culture today.

Interestingly, the study indicated diverse preferences based on gender. Among female junior high school students, the comedy duo Ganbareruya was the top favorite, captivating them with their vibrant energy and comedic talent.

Across high school demographics, results varied slightly. Sandwichman comfortably held first place overall at the high school level, with NON STYLE closely behind. Male high school students favored individual comedian Nakanishi Arata, whereas female counterparts also embraced Sandwichman’s charm, securing them the top spot.

The survey results prompted discussions about the reasons for comedians' popularity. For Sandwichman, students noted their comedy sketches were hilarious and enjoyed the chemistry between them, enhancing their appeal. Reiwa Roman was favored for their sharp wit and compelling performances, demonstrating how intelligence can significantly influence comedic success.

The survey was aimed at capturing preferences for comedic talent expected to surface soon as well. Notably, Batteriizu topped the list of comedians predicted to rise to fame with their innovative comedy style and fresh appeal, indicating shifting interests among youth. Reiwa Roman again ranked favorably, affirming their relevance to upcoming comedic trends.

Overall, the survey not only highlights the present comedic idols but also indicates the direction of future trends, painting a vibrant picture of Japan's comedic scene.
