Julius Malema has been re-elected as President of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) for the third consecutive term, marking another significant milestone for the party he co-founded eleven years ago. This re-election took place during the EFF’s National People’s Assembly, held at the Nasrec Expo Centre in Soweto on December 14, 2024, where more than 2,000 delegates voiced their support for Malema.
The election process was remarkably straightforward; Malema ran unopposed, receiving overwhelming endorsement from the party's voting delegates, who confidently reiterated their support with a resounding “no” to any additional nominations. Alongside Malema, Godrich Gardee has stepped up as the new Deputy President, taking over from Floyd Shivambu, who made headlines earlier this year when he left the EFF to join the uMkhonto weSizwe Party. Other leaders elected include Nontando Nolutshungu as National Chairperson, Omphile Maotwe as Treasurer General, and Marshall Dlamini remaining as Secretary-General. Highlighting the party’s commitment to gender equity, 50% of the positions within the Central Command Team are held by women, demonstrating the EFF’s dedication to inclusivity within its leadership structure.
Even amid this successful assembly, certain absences have raised eyebrows, most significantly the noteworthy absence of Mbuyiseni Ndlozi, the party’s former national spokesperson and prominent member. Speculation about his future within the party grows, especially following Malema's curt dismissal of questions surrounding Ndlozi during press interactions. “We are no longer going to answer any nonsense about Mbuyiseni Ndlozi. This matter is closed,” Malema stated, highlighting the party’s resolve to focus on political matters rather than individual personalities.
Floyd Shivambu's departure, and prospects of Ndlozi possibly facing similar fates have brought to the forefront issues of loyalty and discipline within the EFF. Reports suggest attempts were made to bolster Ndlozi’s position, but these never came to fruition, amplifying internal tensions.
