JR East Launches Green Cars On Chuo Line After Delays

The long-awaited service kicks off on March 15, providing commuter comfort on Tokyo's busiest routes.

JR East is set to introduce Green Cars to the Chuo Line Rapid and the Ome Line starting March 15, 2025, bringing enhanced travel comfort to one of Tokyo's busiest commuter routes.

This eagerly anticipated service rollout will finally allow Green Cars to operate on the major five routes of the Tokyo metropolitan area: Chuo, Tokaido, Tohoku, Joban, and Sobu. The launch, which is arriving four years later than originally planned, signifies progress after various delays were encountered.

Starting last October, JR East has been offering free trial rides on the Green Cars, allowing commuters to experience the new service before the official launch. One commuter, a 22-year-old company employee from Mitaka City, remarked, "I could comfortably work on my computer; the seating was pleasant," sharing his positive encounter during the trial.

The Green Cars will be added to the fourth and fifth carriages of all Chuo Line Rapid trains running between Tokyo and Otsuki, as well as on direct trains servicing the Ome Line from Tachikawa to Ome. Each of these newly outfitted cars will have 180 seats across two cars, catering to the increasing demand for comfortable seating on this heavily trafficked route.

Ensuring passenger comfort, the Green Cars come equipped with power outlets, Wi-Fi, and restrooms. Passengers will also benefit from assistance provided by 'Green Attendants,' who will be on hand to guide travelers and offer refreshments during their journeys. JR East states, "You can have a comfortable experience all the way to your destination,” emphasizing the focus on passenger convenience.

The introduction of Green Cars marks the completion of a long-term development plan. Green Cars first rolled out on the Tokaido Line back in 1969, but it took significant time for services to reach the Chuo Line. Over the decades, as suburban developments expanded and commuting times increased, passengers' needs for comfortable seating have become more pronounced.

While the initial announcement for the Chuo Line's Green Car introduction was made back in 2015, several challenges have hindered timely implementation. Manufacturing delays attributed to semiconductor shortages and the global impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic resultantly pushed back the schedule. Combined with the congested nature of the lines, these delays were compounded by various unique obstacles, making the launch of Green Cars on the Chuo Line particularly challenging.

Finally, with these Green Cars set to roll out shortly, expectations are high for the enhanced travel experience they promise. Commuters have long awaited this advancement, which not only aims to improve comfort during arduous commutes but also to alleviate some of the congestion on the route.

With the upcoming arrival of the Green Cars on the Chuo Line, JR East is taking significant steps toward accommodating and enhancing the commuting experience for countless travelers across Tokyo’s densely populated areas.
