BERLIN - Bonn welcomed approximately 300,000 revelers for the 2025 Rosenmontagszug celebration, the pinnacle of the Rhinish carnival season, marked by vibrant floats, pulsatile music, and simply joyous chaos.
On the sunny afternoon of March 3, thousands of colorful costumed figures filled the streets of Bonn, mingling, singing, and dancing. The city’s historical center became alive with merriment, as traditional as the yearly celebrations themselves.
The lively atmosphere was transformative, as everyone from families to partygoers gathered along the 3.8-kilometer parade route. The sheer number of attendees, around 300,000 according to estimates, turned the event not just festive but also communal—a great congregation of spirit. “Kunterbunt und tolerant, su senn mir he im Jeckenland,” said Marlies Stockhorst, President of the event committee, encapsulating the diverse and inclusive spirit of the day.
At 12:08 PM, the colorful procession officially kicked off, marking the start of three and half hours of non-stop entertainment. Over 4,000 walkers, 117 floats, and 37 baggage wagons paraded through the winding streets, each showcasing elaborate themes aimed at delighting the spectators.
Among the attendees were dignitaries and local officials, including Bonn’s mayor, Katja Dörner, and the president of the Chamber of Commerce, Stefan Hagen. They co-hosted the live stream coverage of the parade, which was eagerly watched by many online fans. Their enthusiasm was palpable as they commented on the proceedings, filling the social media feeds with the day’s highlights.
While the streets were lined with excitement, authorities maintained strict vigilance. Police presence was felt throughout, with over 260 officers ensuring the festivities remained peaceful. Police Director Anja Gans remarked, “Ich möchte mich ausdrücklich für die gute Zusammenarbeit mit der Stadt Bonn... und die Kolleginnen und Kollegen, die mit dafür gesorgt haben, dass der Höhepunkt des rheinischen Straßenkarnevals überwiegend friedlich und störungsfrei gelaufen ist,” emphasizing their collaborative efforts to secure the success of the celebrations.
Despite the overwhelming festivities, the day was not without its hiccups. A small chaotic episode arose when unauthorized individuals attempted to integrate non-official floats made from cardboard. This was swiftly addressed by law enforcement, ensuring order during the parade.
The local emergency services benefitted from the calm atmosphere, with few incidents reported. The Bonn firefighters, alongside the emergency medical teams, were strategically stationed throughout the event, ready for any unforeseen circumstances. Their efforts reflected the spirit of cooperation necessary for large community events.
Festivities were accompanied by diverse music ensembles, including the Sambatruppe Hot Rott Chilis, who brought Brazilian rhythms to the streets. Numerous other performances captivated audiences—musicians and dancers contributed to the vibrant celebration.
Participants' creative costumes contributed significantly to the festive atmosphere. Enthusiastic attendees threw marshmallow horse manure, enhancing the carnival's playful tone, celebrating both the quirks and traditions of the event. Champs from varying local groups like the Colping Family Bonn-Zentral presented elaborate costumes adorned with large paged puzzles, injecting imagination and fun.
Back on the ground, the mobile event prevention project known as the “Event Sprinter” provided necessary hydration and health support to party-goers. Young attendees were actively engaged with the staff, exchanging substances for healthy snacks—an innovative initiative to promote well-being amid the celebrations.
Overall, the Rosenmontagszug was praised as one of Bonn’s best yet, offering boundless joy, safety, and celebration. The atmosphere was inherently festive, marked by friendships and laughter, and contributed positively to the rich cultural heritage of the region.
Another year, another success—Bonn’s Rosenmontagszug remains unrivaled. Plans are already underway to make the next carnival even greater. Until then, the cheers of revelers and the spirit of camaraderie will linger on.
