Mirandés Defeats Tenerife 2-0, Solidifying Promotion Hopes

The win boosts Mirandés to third place, increasing worries for struggling Tenerife.

CD Mirandés solidified their quest for promotion by defeating CD Tenerife 2-0 at the Estadio Municipal de Anduva on March 3, 2025, pushing the visitors closer to relegation.

The match kicked off with Tenerife initially controlling possession, but it was Mirandés who created the first significant opportunity. After 14 minutes, Luismi Cruz from Tenerife made his way through the defense, only to have his shot saved by goalkeeper Raúl Fernández. This promising attempt did not set the tone for the rest of the match.

Things took a dramatic turn for Tenerife when, at the 25-minute mark, defender Enric Gallego fouled Mathis Lachuer inside the box, granting Mirandés a penalty. Urko Izeta stepped up to take the penalty, but his effort was parried by Tenerife goalkeeper Edgar Badía. Fortunately for Mirandés, Izeta reacted quickly, capitalizing on the rebound to score the opening goal, putting them 1-0 up and silencing the visiting supporters.

With this lead, Mirandés gained confidence, and they managed to dominate most of the proceedings. Despite Tenerife's efforts to respond, they struggled to maintain momentum. The first half concluded without any more goals, leaving the score at 1-0 for the home team.

After the break, Mirandés continued to impose their game plan. Only six minutes after halftime, they nearly doubled their lead when Juan Gutiérrez headed close to the post. Erzally, Tenerife’s Diarra found himself with another opportunity shortly afterwards but missed the target.

The game changed significantly at the 68-minute mark when Mirandés scored again. A clever play down the left wing saw Hugo Rincón deliver a pinpoint cross, which was met by Marco Reina’s header, nestling the ball deep inside Badía's net. With the score now 2-0, it became evident how important this result was for Mirandés as they moved closer to securing playoff football.

Tenerife's frustration grew as they were unable to find the back of the net, signaling another disappointing result for coach Álvaro Cervera and his squad. Following the goal, Mirandés dug deep, deflateganguishing the pressure. The final whistle blew, concluding the tie at 2-0.

The result places Mirandés firmly third, now sitting with 51 points—just behind the direct promotion spots occupied by SD Huesca and Real Racing Club. Tenerife, on the other hand, is left with only 19 points, firmly entrenched at the bottom of the table, now at serious risk of relegation to the Primera RFEF.

Reflecting on the match, coach Alessio Lisci expressed satisfaction with the result, emphasizing team strategy and resilience. Meanwhile, Cervera lamented the missed opportunities and evident lack of confidence shown by his players.

Looking forward, Mirandés will aim to continue their good form as they prepare to welcome Real Oviedo on March 8, 2025. Conversely, Tenerife will host SD Huesca the day after as they desperately try to turn their season around.
