While Wicked’s Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande were scene stealers on the Golden Globes red carpet, their co-star Jonathan Bailey was missing in action. The actor’s absence isn’t all too surprising, as he hasn’t attended any awards show events this weekend and does not have an individual nomination. He was last photographed at a Wicked photo call in November and is preparing to star in a West End production of Richard II, which opens on February 10. He told British Vogue last month, "Everything else is on pause until Richard II opens." While Bailey has no individual nods, Wicked is nominated in one of the biggest categories of the night: Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.
Bailey wore a white custom Givenchy suit at last year’s Golden Globes. Last month, he spoke to British Vogue about the jarring shift between being home in Brighton, England, and immersing himself in his roles for work. "It can be a hard, cold transition, so I get back to friends as soon as possible or I go traveling," he said. "I love Salento in Italy—I try and go every year." He addressed how equally brutal it was to adjust to a new level of fame. "It felt quite hard-hitting after Bridgerton came out," he said. "I really struggled initially; I was overwhelmed by it. But the people in your life have to adapt too. That’s the hardest thing: you see them struggling before you see it in yourself, someone pushing past your dear mum and dad to get a picture. I’m really good now at saying no to photos."
He had nothing but glowing things to say about Wicked, though: "When I watched it, I sobbed," he said. "I think it’s a masterpiece."
Despite the emotional turmoil surrounding fame, Bailey remains focused on his career. He has also been busy lately with roles beyond Wicked. Alongside his stage commitments, he is expected to return as Anthony Bridgerton in the upcoming season four of Bridgerton, as well as starring as paleontologist Dr. Henry Loomis in the forthcoming Jurassic World Rebirth.
While fans speculated about Bailey’s potential attendance at the Golden Globes to support his co-stars, it became clear his commitment to theater took precedence. He is set to reprise his strong performance skills as he takes on the titular role of Richard II. The London Theatre Company production, directed by Nicholas Hytner, is poised for performances starting next month.
Reflecting on his career, he shared, "People talk about fame and Bridgerton, but the one moment where I really thought I’d made it was when Nicholas cast me as Cassio 10 years ago. He gave me the biggest break. He’s been an incredible mentor." Hytner, who directed Bailey previously, has praised the actor's talent and dedication. "[Bailey] had the rare ability to speak Shakespeare as if it’s his first language," Hytner noted, celebrating Bailey's exceptional skills.
Looking forward, it’s clear Bailey’s commitment to the stage remains strong as he prepares for the role of Richard II. With awards events highlighting the achievements of actors and films, his absence at the Golden Globes speaks volumes about his dedication to theater. It serves as both reminder of the challenges of fame and the personal journeys actors navigate as they pursue their artistry.
