A Johns Hopkins shuttle bus crashed into a Baltimore building on April 19, 2025, resulting in a multi-car accident that left at least nine people hospitalized. The incident occurred around 5:19 p.m. at the intersection of Charles and 25th streets in Charles Village, as reported by the Baltimore City Police.
According to initial investigations, the shuttle bus collided with another vehicle in the intersection, which caused it to veer off course and crash into a nearby building. Eyewitnesses described the moment of impact as shocking. "We were just chilling, just watching TV, and next thing you know, we heard this big boom. I actually thought that it was a building collapsing," said Corrin Thomas, a resident of the impacted building. "I see all of this debris everywhere and the car and the bus, and I'm like, oh my God, is everybody okay? Is anybody hurt?"
Surveillance footage obtained by 11 News revealed that a white SUV struck the side of the shuttle bus, leading to a chain reaction where the bus hit two other vehicles before crashing into the building. Residents living in the upper floors of the building reported that the entire structure shook during the crash.
In the aftermath, the building inspector condemned the site, which houses several businesses and multiple apartments. Cory Backus, another resident, expressed concern about the sudden displacement. "Well, it's inconvenient because, like now, you know, we will have to go to work tomorrow but they said they condemned the building," he said. "They said everybody has to get out. So now we got to go find out where to stay for tonight."
As for the injured, officials have not released specific details regarding their conditions. In a statement, Johns Hopkins University confirmed the involvement of one of its shuttle buses in the accident. "Earlier this evening, a Johns Hopkins shuttle bus was involved in an accident at 25th and North Charles Street. The driver and several passengers were transported to area hospitals, and we are working to identify and reach out to all of the shuttle passengers. We are fully cooperating with BPD's continuing investigation of the accident, and we will update our community as more information becomes available," the statement read.
The crash has raised concerns about traffic safety in the area, especially given the busy intersection where the accident occurred. Residents and local business owners are now left grappling with the aftermath of the incident, as they await further updates from authorities.
In addition to the immediate physical impacts of the crash, the long-term implications for the community are also being considered. The intersection of Charles and 25th streets is known for heavy traffic, and this incident could prompt discussions about potential safety measures or traffic redesigns to prevent future accidents.
As the investigation continues, Baltimore City Police have urged anyone with additional information or eyewitness accounts to come forward. The community is rallying together, offering support to those displaced by the crash and hoping for a swift recovery for the injured.
This incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of urban life and the importance of safety measures in public transportation. As investigations unfold, Baltimore residents are left to ponder what changes might come to improve safety at such critical intersections.
Further updates are expected as Johns Hopkins and local authorities work together to address the concerns raised by this unfortunate event. The community remains hopeful for the recovery of those injured and for a resolution that ensures the safety of all residents and commuters in the area.
