Jason Momoa To Star As Lobo In DC's Supergirl Movie

Momoa confirms his dream role as the antihero Lobo alongside Milly Alcock's Supergirl.

The DC Universe is welcoming back Jason Momoa, but this time as the intergalactic antihero Lobo rather than his former role as Aquaman. According to Deadline, the actor has officially been cast to portray Lobo in the upcoming film, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. The film, directed by Craig Gillespie, is set to begin filming on January 13, 2025, with a release date scheduled for June 26, 2026.

Momoa's casting as Lobo marks a unique transition for the star, who has expressed his enthusiasm for the character on numerous occasions. “Lobo was always my favorite, and I always wanted to play Lobo,” he stated, adding it’s ‘the perfect role’ for him. Reflecting on this moment, he emphasized, “If they call me and ask me to play it? It’s a f— yeah,” solidifying his passion for the role. His excitement became more tangible when he confirmed the news via Instagram with the simple caption, “They called.”

Alongside Momoa, the film features Milly Alcock as Supergirl, Eve Ridley as Ruthye Marye Knoll, and Matthias Schoenaerts portraying Krem of the Yellow Hills. Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will adapt elements from Tom King’s comic book series of the same name, placing Alcock's character on adventures across the galaxy. James Gunn, now at the helm of the DCU, teased the audiences with great enthusiasm, stating, “Ana and Craig have been doing fantastic jobs spearheading this. I can’t wait for [Supergirl] to come out!”

Momoa's relationship with the character of Lobo has been long-standing. He actively campaigned for the opportunity to play Lobo, previously acknowledging, “I used to collect comics... and [Lobo] was always my favorite.” The character is easily recognized within the DC fanbase as the cigar-smoking, motorcycle-riding bounty hunter from the planet Czarnia. Since his introduction to comics, Lobo has evolved from being merely the villain of the 1983 Omega Men series to earning his own titles and becoming widely popular for his over-the-top humor and violence.

Gunn's vision for the new DCU—shaped alongside Peter Safran—aims to invigorate and redefine the cinematic universe, and with Momoa's casting as Lobo, the foundations for exciting narratives are being laid. This transition for the actor from beloved superhero Aquaman to the ruthless Lobo has drawn attention, as it signifies the studios' efforts to breathe new life and creative potential within the franchise.

Scheduled for principal photography to commence soon, anticipation continues to build for what Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will offer. While many details remain tightly under wraps, it's clear both Momoa's casting and the fresh approach to Supergirl suggest substantial character depth and dynamic storytelling is on the horizon.

Momoa's role as Lobo not only signifies thrilling new territory for the actor but also reflects the larger paradigm shift happening within the DC Universe. Having been one of the prominent faces of the now-defunct DCEU, there are questions around audience acceptance, especially with modern cinematic audiences likely familiar with his Aquaman character. Yet, parallels drawn with actors crossing over various comic universes—such as Chris Evans or Aaron Taylor-Johnson—indicate viewers are often willing to embrace these transformations.

Audiences now await the fresh interpretations and evolutions under Gunn’s creative leadership, especially as Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow edges closer to its release date. With Jason Momoa at the forefront as Lobo, fans can be assured of more entertaining dynamics and explorations of beloved comic characters coming to the big screen.

With Supergirl gracing the universe alongside her own unique adventures and Momoa bringing to life one of DC's most infamous characters, the excitement couldn't be higher as DC Studios sets its course for the next era of superhero storytelling.
