Lech And Raków Target Rising Icelandic Star Gíslí Thórðarson

Both Polish clubs pursue the talented midfielder amid high competition and rejected offers from Víkingur Reykjavík.

Lech Poznań and Raków Częstochowa are eagerly pursuing young Icelandic talent Gíslí Thórðarson, currently playing for Víkingur Reykjavík. At just 20 years old, Thórðarson has captured the attention of multiple clubs, including those from Poland and abroad, as both Lech and Raków have made offers for the promising midfielder.

Reports indicate these offers were rejected by the Icelandic club, which is asking for between 500,000 to 600,000 euros, along with performance-related bonuses, including percentage cuts from any future transfers. The overall asking price sits close to one million euros, which Víkingur hopes to earn for their rising star.

Thórðarson, who has not yet made his senior debut for the Icelandic national team, showed impressive performances last season. Despite modest statistics with two goals and two assists from 14 matches this past season, his contributions during European competitions caught the eyes of scouts. Víkingur surprisingly finished 19th on the table during the league phase of the UEFA Conference League last season but managed to reach the playoffs, where they faced Panathinaikos—though Thórðarson did not participate.

According to sources, clubs from Sweden, Denmark, and even Legia Warsaw are closely monitoring Thórðarson's situation. The young midfielder previously made headlines by helping Iceland's U21 squad achieve an unexpected victory over Poland's U21 team last November. Such performances have led to increased interest from several clubs and significant speculation about his future.

Lech Poznań, known for its focus on signing players from the North, appears particularly enthusiastic about Thórðarson. This follows their successful acquisition of other Nordic players, including Patrik Walemark from Sweden and Finnish international Daniel Hakens. The club is determined to secure talent compliant with their competition standards, as reflected by their previous encounters with teams from the Icelandic league.

Notably, Lech faced off against Víkingur during the 2022 UEFA Conference League qualifiers, where they overcame their Icelandic rivals after extra time. Back then, Thórðarson wasn't even eligible for game time, indicating the swift evolution of his professional tenure.

Raków, on the other hand, is also scouting another young talent from Iceland—19-year-old Robert Frosti Thorkelsson, who is currently with Stjarnan, another top team from the Icelandic league. The interest shown by these clubs is part of their broader strategy of strengthening their rosters with young, promising players. While the bids for Thórðarson have currently failed, there remains optimism about future negotiations as clubs continue to vie for the midfielder’s services.

The pursuit of Thórðarson highlights the growing trend of Polish clubs tapping talent from Iceland, seeking players who can adapt and thrive under pressure. With the current transfer window open, Thórðarson’s situation is likely to develop rapidly, adding to the excitement of this year’s footballing season.

Overall, both Lech Poznań and Raków Częstochowa are deeply interested not only for Thórðarson’s skill and youth but also for the prospect of future gains as Icelandic football continues to gain prominence on the European stage.
