OSAKA -- On January 5, 2025, the usual fluidity of the Sanyo Shinkansen Line was interrupted when a passenger aboard the No. 849 bullet train from Shin-Osaka to Hakata pressed the emergency button at Okayama Station. Intended for emergencies, the button's activation led to the unusual scenario of 14 different trains facing delays of up to 23 minutes, impacting around 6,600 travelers.
JR West, the operating company, reported the incident occurred at approximately 12:50 p.m. Although the crew swiftly checked for any abnormalities, the train had to depart roughly 20 minutes later due to the alarm raised by the passenger's inquiry about their ticket. A representative from JR West noted, "The emergency button is provided for emergencies. We would like passengers to find the conductors and contact them directly instead of pressing the button," pointing out the unintended ramifications of misusing the emergency protocol.
While one part of the Shinkansen system was embroiled in delays, another was gearing up to offer new culinary experiences. Beginning January 14, 2025, East Japan Railway Co. (JR East) will introduce Miso Pan, delicious bread made with fermented bean paste housed inside a baguette, to Tokyo. This treat, hailing from Numata, Gunma Prefecture, will soon be available to commuters and enthusiasts alike.
The Friand bakery, responsible for crafting these delectable snacks, will dispatch the Miso Pan on bullet trains destined for Tokyo Station. Each Tuesday, trains will carry 30 pieces of both the regular Miso Pan and the Miso Butter variation, which includes butter along with the miso paste. The prices for these unique treats are set at 302 yen ($1.90) for the regular kind and 324 yen for the buttered version. Customers will be able to purchase the beloved local specialty starting around 2 p.m. at the Nomono Tokyo-eki Gransta Marunouchi store located outside the ticket gate on the station's basement floor, according to JR East's Takasaki Branch Office.
Meanwhile, Japan continues to innovate within its high-speed rail systems to keep passenger experiences swift, enjoyable, and luxurious. The introduction of the CR450, the world's fastest bullet train, dazzles travel buffs with its impressive top speed of 281 mph. With its aerodynamic design to minimize drag, the CR450 promises unparalleled performance, featuring ergonomic business-class seating and restaurant-style dining options for its passengers, ensuring comfort at such high velocities.
Equipped with smart monitoring tools, this state-of-the-art train collects real-time data from over 4,000 stations, facilitating both safety and efficiency. It showcases adaptive lighting and innovative restroom facilities, among other cutting-edge features aimed at enhancing customer satisfaction.
Set to revolutionize travel not only within Japan but also as part of the global rail experience, the CR450 exemplifies the push toward more eco-friendly and technologically advanced transportation solutions.
