Jazz Quartets Ignite Stages Across Germany

Innovative ensembles bring diverse musical influences and styles to audiences this season.

Jazz enthusiasts across Germany are set for an exciting season as several jazz quartets prepare to showcase their unique styles and interpretations of classic and contemporary works. From the innovative Gershwin Piano Quartet to the eclectic Moles Ahead, audiences can expect vibrant performances blending various genres and influences.

On March 22, 2025, the renowned Gershwin Piano Quartet will kick off its latest performance series at the iconic Gare du Nord. Since its inception in 1996, this quartet has captivated audiences worldwide with its theatrical showcase combining classical elegance and jazz spontaneity. With four skilled pianists playing on four grand pianos, they offer original arrangements of famous compositions, pushing the boundaries of musical interpretation. Their concerts often sell out, reflecting their popularity and the unique musical experience they provide.

Meanwhile, another exciting event is set for the Christuskirche, where the Hans Fickelscher Quartet will perform on New Year's Eve. This ensemble, led by Heidenheim's own percussionist Hans Fickelscher and featuring guitarist Martin Wiedmann, saxophonist Jürgen Häußler, and vocalist/pianist Beatrix Steinhübl, brings fresh perspectives to traditional gospel music. Their repertoire encompasses not only beloved gospel songs but also cross-genre influences, adding elements of blues and rock to create rich, engaging performances. Steinhübl emphasizes the deep connection they have with gospel music, stating, "Ich habe erst dort kapiert, was das eigentlich ist. Das Innerste zum Ausdruck bringen, darum geht es.” This ability to communicate genuine emotion allows them to connect deeply with their audiences.

The Cats & Breakkies will also bring their unique sound to the stage at Moritzhof on January 17, 2025. This youthful Berlin-based quartet fuses diverse musical styles, from techno to jazz, creating what they describe as "Organic Electro.” With instruments ranging from drums and synthesizers to guitars and bass, they craft both danceable rhythms and complex soundscapes. Their concerts invite audiences to both enjoy the grooves and analyze the intricacies of their music.

Lastly, Moles Ahead will perform at the Kurhaustheater in Bad Bramstedt on January 17, showcasing their versatility across the jazz spectrum, including standards, fusion, and original compositions. Since forming in 2017, they’ve demonstrated their ability to cross genres effortlessly, drawing on each member's extensive musical background to create both classic and innovative jazz experiences.

Tickets for these performances range from 15 to 18 Euros, reflecting the variety of opportunities available for jazz lovers to immerse themselves in performances featuring deeply personal and vocally impactful interpretations of music. The upcoming concerts promise to deliver memorable nights filled with rhythmic swing, emotional connections, and masterful musicianship, celebrating the richness of jazz culture across Germany.

With such diverse offerings, this jazz season invites audiences to experience not just music, but the stories and emotions intertwined with each performance. The rich tradition of jazz continues to thrive, and these quartets are breathing new life and creativity, ensuring audiences will leave both entertained and inspired.
