Italy Welcomes Daylight Saving Time With Longer Evenings

As clocks spring forward, Italians prepare for the benefits and challenges of the time change

As spring approaches, so does the annual transition to daylight saving time in Italy. On the night between Saturday, March 29, and Sunday, March 30, 2025, clocks will move forward one hour, from 2:00 AM to 3:00 AM. While this means losing an hour of sleep, it also brings an extra hour of evening daylight, a change that many look forward to as the days grow longer.

The shift to daylight saving time is not just a matter of adjusting clocks; it symbolizes the arrival of spring, with longer days leading to increased energy and, according to data, reduced energy consumption. The rationale behind this time change dates back to World War I, when it was first introduced to conserve coal. Today, the goal has shifted towards saving electrical energy and minimizing the use of artificial lighting.

According to Terna, the company managing Italy's electricity transmission, daylight saving time is expected to save approximately 400 million kWh annually, equivalent to the yearly consumption of about 150,000 families. This translates into around 90 million euros in savings on electricity bills. Furthermore, the change contributes to environmental sustainability by preventing the emission of about 180,000 tons of CO₂, comparable to removing thousands of cars from the road.

However, the transition is not without its downsides. The Italian Society of Environmental Medicine warns that the shift can disrupt the circadian rhythm, leading to insomnia, mood swings, headaches, and even an increased risk of cardiovascular issues. There is a noticeable uptick in heart attacks and accidents in the days following the time change, as the body struggles to adjust to the new schedule.

As the debate over the future of daylight saving time continues, the European Parliament has been discussing whether to abolish the time change altogether since 2018. While some countries, like Russia, have already eliminated the practice, Italy appears to favor retaining daylight saving time, particularly for its benefits in energy savings and sustainability.

In practical terms, as daylight saving time begins on March 30, 2025, Italians can expect longer evenings and the potential for increased outdoor activities. However, this also means some individuals may feel groggy or fatigued as they adapt to the new schedule. To ease the transition, experts recommend gradually adjusting sleep patterns in the days leading up to the change, such as going to bed earlier and avoiding heavy meals and caffeine in the evening.

Despite the potential health risks, many still appreciate the extended daylight hours that come with the change. The benefits of more evening light can enhance mood, encourage outdoor activities, and even contribute to social interactions, making the adjustment worthwhile for many.

As the clock strikes 3:00 AM on March 30, 2025, Italians will officially welcome daylight saving time once again. While the loss of an hour of sleep may be a small price to pay, the gains in daylight and potential energy savings are significant. It’s a change that, despite its drawbacks, many embrace as a herald of spring.
