Indiana Police Arrest Duo Linked To Veteran Marker Thefts

Community outrage mounts as bronze burial markers taken from cemeteries spark investigation

Indiana Police Arrest Duo Linked To Veteran Marker Thefts

Police authorities in Indiana have recently uncovered a disturbing trend of thefts involving bronze burial markers from veterans' graves, leading to the arrest of two suspects. This liaison between law enforcement and the community was triggered when the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office began investigating the thefts on August 28, after multiple reports indicated the disappearance of veteran markers from various cemeteries across the region.

The investigation shed light on at least 15 stolen bronze markers, alongside one other marker which was found damaged. Cemeteries affected included Union Mills, Rolling Prairie, Carmel, Pinola, Greenwood, and St. Stan’s. Authorities were quick to mobilize, prompting citizens to check their local cemeteries for missing markers and provide any information they could.

The response from the community was swift, with credible tips flowing to law enforcement just one day after the Sheriff’s Office issued their public appeal. Detective Jake Koch and his partner were instrumental as the investigation started yielding results almost immediately. Following this collective effort, they arrested 53-year-old Terry Wood and 25-year-old Breanna Puentez for their roles in the theft spree.

Police executed the operation dubbed “Justice, Peace and Salute,” apprehending Wood at his residence located on Andrew Avenue, where additional evidence tied him and Puentez to the cemetery mischief. Authorities recovered stolen items and arrested Puentez later on the same day.

Both suspects now face serious charges, including one count of felony theft and multiple counts of cemetery mischief. Wood is currently being held on a cash-only bond of $15,005, whilst Puentez, due to previous legal entanglements, does not have bond eligibility. They are expected to remain behind bars as the judicial process advances.

Although the crimes committed against veterans and their legacies have sparked outrage among both law enforcement and the community, officials, such as Captain Derek J. Allen of the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office, have expressed hope. He remarked on November 6, “This type of criminal behavior is disgusting, unacceptable, and will not be tolerated.” His sentiments resonate deeply, as many community members feel the same fury and sadness about this unprecedented violation of respect for fallen veterans.

The thefts of these markers strike at the heart of honoring military service, as they serve as lasting tributes to the sacrifices made by these individuals. With the investigation still active, future developments may evolve, with tangible efforts aimed at recovering more stolen property and reinforcing the dignity owed to our veterans.

Besides the immediate legal ramifications for those involved, the case highlights the importance of communal vigilance and remembrance. The diligence showed by local residents and authorities reflects strongly on the community's commitment to protect its heritage and honor those who served.

Officials remain committed to pursuing any additional leads or incidents linked to this case, with the aim of ensuring such disrespectful acts do not become commonplace, reminding everyone of the deep-seated values we owe our servicemen and women.
