Teams Gear Up For 101st Hakone Ekiden 2025

The 2025 Hakone Ekiden promises fierce competition among 21 universities aiming for victory on the historic course.

The 101st Tokyo-Hakone University Ekiden, known simply as Hakone Ekiden, is poised to return on January 2 and 3, 2025, captivating fans with its blend of competitive spirit and storied tradition. Each year, this highly anticipated race allows university runners to showcase their talents over approximately 217 kilometers, with participants racing between the prestigious starting line at Otemachi and the scenic district of Hakone.

This year's event sees 21 universities participating, each presenting athletes with impressive credentials and previous successes. Notably, Kokugakuin University, coming off strong wins at the Izumo Ekiden and All Japan University Ekiden, aims for three consecutive victories. The team's successful track record sets high expectations not only for the athletes but for coaching staff as well, signaling their commitment to excel.

Leading Kokugakuin is captain Itsuki Hirabayashi, who has emerged as both a leader and role model. "My goal is to inspire individual growth within the team as we prepare for this monumental task," stated Hirabayashi, emphasizing the importance of mutual support among teammates. His commitment to maintaining team morale underlines the collaborative spirit necessary for success.

Experts and coaches are paying close attention to previous performances, such as those showcased at the Izumo road race where runners typically refine their competitive strategies. Teams are relying heavily on their prior race dynamics, preparing effectively for the demands of the Hakone course.

Hirabayashi's personal athletic achievements are noteworthy; he recently clocked impressive times during the Kanto University Championships, proving he is more than capable of leading his team both physically and strategically. "Our focus is not just on individual performances, but making sure we uphold the standard of excellence that's expected of us during the Ekiden," he reflects.

The selection process for participating athletes centers heavily on speed over distance, leading many teams to develop their strongest possible lineups. This season, many runners like Fumiya Oshima from Hosei University have pushed their limits by breaking both the 5,000-meter and 10,000-meter university records, demonstrating competitive prowess and hitting remarkable timings.

Oshima expressed his determination: "The goal for me this season is to push myself to achieve distances lower than 27 minutes. I see this as part of my contribution toward the team's ultimate performance at Hakone," citing the necessity for every member to be prepared for their respective sections of the enduring race.

The atmosphere surrounding the race intensifies as teams craft their strategies. For example, Meiji University’s coach articulates his expectations for precise training leading up to the event, spotlighting athletes who have previously excelled to potentially lift the overall performance of the team.

Anticipation builds around those who have returned from injury or improved their previous personal bests. Many competitors are hoping to rise above their past finishes, setting their aspirations higher than ever before.

While individual performances are pivotal, team camaraderie often becomes the heartbeat of the competition. Previous races have shown how well-prepared groups outshine, with recent parallels drawn between current preparations and historic results, recovering from past disappointments.

The race kickoff sets for 8:00 AM on January 2nd at Otemachi and includes broadcasts across various platforms, catering to viewers wanting to follow the electrifying encounters. With the echoing cheers of supporters along the route, the participants push forward, striving not just for personal accolades but for the pride and honor of their schools.

This year's race is not just about the finish times; it’s the culmination of effort, training, and strategy where students become inspirational figures, making the Hakone Ekiden emblematic of endurance, tenacity, and collective achievement.

Fans are urged to tune in early as this prestigious event shapes the narrative of university-level athletics, promising thrilling moments and inspiring stories from January 2 through January 3, whether live or online.
