The sand bath hot springs in Ibusuki City have gained attention for their unique health benefits, as recent studies compare their effects against traditional baths and saunas.
On March 21, 2025, many tourists flocked to the Sand Bath Hall Saraku, eager to experience the soothing effects of being buried in sand. This form of bathing, known as "sunamushi onsen," offers a unique relaxation method that has been a staple in this region.
In an effort to enhance the appeal of this natural wonder, Ibusuki City collaborated with Tsukuba University and Kanoya University of Physical Education to conduct scientific research into the health effects of sand bathing. This is particularly significant as Ibusuki has not published any scientific data regarding the health effects of their sand baths for 40 years.
The study engaged fourteen adult men, aged 20 to 40, who participated in comparative bathing sessions of sand bathing, regular baths, and saunas, with their measurements taken before, during, and after each experience. The researchers focused on metrics such as breathing rates and blood pressure.
Associate Professor Naoto Fujii of Tsukuba University remarked, "Bathing itself may have the effect of lowering blood pressure, with potential long-term benefits" and further elaborated that “In the case of sand bathing, deep body temperature does not rise excessively. It allows for safe warming of the body." These insights could be indicative of why many find the experience enjoyable and health-promoting.
Results revealed that all bathing methods led to a decrease in blood pressure after the sessions. However, what set sand bathing apart was its notably lower stress level associated with breathing and a diminished risk of complications such as breathlessness or fainting, compared to traditional bathing and sauna sessions.
Fujii stated, "Sand bathing has significantly less respiratory stress, meaning brain circulation is maintained at a higher level, which suggests that it is relatively superior in safety compared to other bathing methods." This conclusion likely aligns with the experience of many who prefer sunamushi onsen for its calming effects.
Ibusuki Mayor Akihisa Uchiage expressed optimism that promoting the benefits of sand bathing could enhance the city’s economy. “By spreading the word about the effects and merits of sand bathing, I expect Ibusuki to become busier and generate economic benefits for the community.” The city plans to utilize these findings in various promotional activities to attract more visitors.
The appeal of Ibusuki's sand bath hot springs is underscored by their annual patronage, which totals around 250,000. Residents and tourists are drawn to the sensation of warmth and relaxation the sands provide, alongside the scientifically supported health advantages emerged from the study.
As Ibusuki continues to develop its unique identity as a destination focused on wellness and natural beauty, researchers and city officials alike hope that these findings will not only affirm the age-old traditions surrounding the sand bath but also establish a more significant scientific basis to attract a broader audience.
In summary, the scientifically verified advantages of Ibusuki's sand bath hot springs signal exciting possibilities for both tourism and community health, with both local authorities and researchers eager to promote their innovative sand bathing experience.
