Hyogo Police Demand Deletion Of Misleading Election Claims

Police criticize councilor's social media post alleging internal support for specific candidates during gubernatorial election.

Hyogo Prefectural Police have taken steps to correct misinformation related to the recent gubernatorial election. A social media post made by a city councilor from Himeji, affiliated with the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, prompted the police to request the deletion and correction of what they claim are false statements about their operational conduct.

The post, made on X (formerly Twitter) on the 20th of this month, alleged internal orders within the Hyogo Prefectural Police to support specific candidates, contradicting regulations against police involvement in electoral activities. These claims followed the re-election of Governor Motohiko Saito in the November 2024 elections.

According to police officials, they formally submitted their request to the local party chapter on the 23rd of this month, asserting the claims made on social media about directives issued to support candidates were entirely unfounded. The police’s general affairs division clarified to Yomiuri Shimbun reporters, stating, "We have no record of issuing any such directive." This assertion highlights severe legal restrictions placed upon law enforcement agencies during political campaigns, aimed at maintaining neutrality and public trust.

Police Chief Noriyuki Murai expressed his discontent on Facebook, indicating intentions to protest against the councilor’s statement vehemently. Murai remarked on the need for decisive actions to safeguard the reputation of the police force amid these allegations. The councilor's assertion directly challenges the integrity of the police's professional responsibilities and appears to jeopardize the public's trust, which is viewed as foundational to effective law enforcement.

Additional scrutiny arose following the request for clarification concerning the death of former councilor Hideaki Takeuchi, who passed away under tragic circumstances on the 18th. Speculation circulated on social media, alleging he was to be arrested, which Murai firmly denied during the recent council meeting, branding the information as "completely unfounded."

The police department's efforts to correct the narrative surrounding these events is emblematic of their commitment to transparency and accountability. This episode serves as a reminder of the complex interplay between political narratives, social media, and public perception. Despite the dismissal of the councilor’s claims, the police must remain vigilant and proactive to maintain public confidence, especially during politically charged periods.

Currently, the leadership within the Hyogo Liberal Democratic Party is contemplating the best course of action following the police's appeal. Party leaders acknowledged the gravity of the situation and are discussing potential ramifications to the councilor’s statements. The outcome will likely have lasting effects on the relationship between local government and law enforcement agencies, and the political climate within Hyogo Prefecture.
