Hurricane Ernesto Poses Threat Of Heavy Rain And High Seas

Newfoundland prepares for impact as storm heads south of the island bringing significant rainfall

Newfoundland is bracing for the impact of Hurricane Ernesto, which is rapidly moving through the North Atlantic yet expected to pass just south of the island. Despite this fortunate development, the storm will still deliver significant rainfall and high seas to the region.

Environment Canada has issued tropical cyclone statements for several parts of Newfoundland, including St. John's, highlighting the expected rain and gusty winds. "It’s going to go through within the course of a few hours, but it will be quite wet and quite nasty there for a few hours," said David Neil, the warning preparedness meteorologist.

Ernesto, having made landfall in Bermuda, caused power outages for over 23,000 residents before being classified again as a hurricane after initially weakening. Meteorologists initially feared the hurricane would steer toward Newfoundland, but it has shifted its course to veer well south of the province as noted by Neil on Monday morning.

The storm is predicted to bring between 50 to 70 millimeters of rain to the southeast, especially to the Avalon Peninsula and St. John's. Rain is anticipated to start later today and should last for several hours, likely affecting evening activities and travel plans.

Strong winds accompanying the rain have raised concerns about high waves and potential coastal flooding. The agency warns of large waves, some possibly reaching ten meters offshore, particularly near the southern Avalon and Placentia Bay later tonight.

Despite the risks associated with the high surf, many people often venture out to see the ocean's fury during storms. "I know people like to go see the big waves with these storms. It is quite dangerous," Neil warned, emphasizing the risks involved.

The situation is compounded by the fact the waves are expected to coincide with lower tides, which could lessen the potential for widespread damage. Chris Fogarty from the Canadian Hurricane Centre echoed this sentiment, stating the timing of Ernesto’s arrival could help minimize damage.

Residents are still advised to stay away from shorelines where the waves may pose serious risks. Fogarty remarked, "Most people won't be around the coastline at this time anyway, so we're really fortunate there."

Port authorities have proactively canceled ferry services due to the hurricane risk, reflecting the overall preparedness of the community. The Marine Atlantic service announced the cancellation of evening ferries connecting Argenti to North Sydney as safety precautions.

The hurricane's forecasted path has raised alarms about potential coastal flooding along the western shore of the Avalon Peninsula. Experts recommend keeping off roads and being cautious of potential flash floods.

While it seems Newfoundland will dodge Ernesto's most severe impacts, its neighboring provinces like Nova Scotia may still face aggressive swells. Residents along the southern coast are urged to prepare for rough conditions from the storm and heed any safety advisories.

Elaborate preparations and alerts are being issued as the weather agency monitors the storm closely. Officials are maintaining constant contact with local governments and emergency services to manage the storm's impact effectively.

Social media updates have been key for residents, as Environment Canada actively shares updates about the storm's movement and effects. Meteorologist Dale Foote is also assessing the scope of the storm throughout the region.

Although Ernesto's anticipated course offers some reprieve, it serves as another reminder of the unpredictable nature of hurricanes during the Atlantic season. The region's positive outcome from this storm does not diminish the overall risks associated with future hurricanes as the season progresses.

According to forecasts, the rain and high seas are expected to clear out by early Tuesday morning, signaling the impending end of Ernesto's impact. Nevertheless, authorities continue to encourage vigilance as atmospheric conditions can shift unexpectedly.

Residents, particularly those near beaches and coastal areas, should stay updated with local advisories and weather alerts through apps and news feeds. Over the coming days, as the storm dissipates, the focus will shift to recovery efforts and ensuring community safety.
