This tragic event left behind more than 230,000 lives lost across the Indian Ocean, following the powerful 9.1 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Sumatra, Indonesia, which triggered towering waves.
Twenty years later, the memories remain raw for those directly affected, with heartfelt tributes and ceremonies marking the occasion. Muhamad Amirudin, who lost two children to the tsunami, shared the pain many experience as he visited the mass graves at Ulee Lheue village, where over 14,000 unidentified victims are buried. "We miss them and we still do not know where they are. All we know is every year we visit the mass graves..." he said, reflecting the enduring search for closure.

Whereas grief unfurled across Sri Lanka, where more than 35,000 lives were lost, communities came together across religions, holding ceremonies and honoring the nearly 2,000 souls lost on the Queen of the Sea train. "I looked for them everywhere for years and still, no information about them. Their loss is great sorrow and pain for me," remarked Anura Ranjith, still searching for his sister and her daughter. Across the country, silence was observed to reflect on past tragedies.
Celebrations were not limited to Indonesia and Thailand; hundreds gathered at Chennai's Marina Beach, where rituals of remembrance included pouring milk and placing floral tributes to honor the thousands who perished. According to official estimates, 10,749 people were killed across India, with Tamil Nadu suffering the most heavy losses.
