Avalanche Sign Goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood To Five-Year Extension

Colorado Avalanche secure their goalie for the future with lucrative contract after recent trade acquisition.

The Colorado Avalanche have made headlines with their recent decision to extend the contract of goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood, signing him to a five-year contract worth $5.25 million annually. The announcement, which came on December 27, 2024, follows Blackwood's impressive performance since his acquisition from the San Jose Sharks just weeks prior.

Previously, Blackwood was handed over to the Avalanche during a trade on December 9, 2024, and since then, he has settled quickly, posting a record of 3-1-0 with remarkably low stats: 2.03 goals-against average and .931 save percentage. Avalanche General Manager Chris MacFarland expressed satisfaction with the timing of the deal, noting, "When we acquired Mackenzie a few weeks ago, we wanted to let him get to Denver, get acclimated to his new team, new city, and then in due time we’d reach out to him and his representatives. We are thrilled to get this deal done now and have Mackenzie under contract for the next six years."

This contract solidifies Blackwood's place as the primary goaltender as the Avalanche eye another playoff run. With his substantial NHL experience, beginning as the second goalie drafted back in 2015, Blackwood has transitioned through teams, seeing considerable action with the New Jersey Devils and most recently the Sharks. Blackwood’s history displays consistent development—his stature, combined with agility, has made him effective for his new team.

Historically, the Avalanche struggled with goaltending before the trade, recording one of the league's worst save percentages at .866. Yet, since Blackwood joined their ranks, they have been revitalized between the pipes. They previously occupied the 12th spot in the NHL standings, but with the upgrade, they now find themselves climbing the ranks with confidence.

The Avalanche now look to build momentum, taking proactive steps to secure their goalkeeping after parting ways with Alexandar Georgiev, their former starter. Michal Farland's decision to overhaul the position shows both urgency and clarity, recognizing the importance of stable and efficient goaltending needed to remain competitive. Alongside Blackwood is Scott Wedgewood, who was also acquired to strengthen the net.

Blackwood's early performance has already left positive impressions on the coaching staff and management. "He’s a big body, athletic goaltender who is still young and still growing as a goaltender," added MacFarland. The Avalanche have noted Blackwood’s seamless fit with their style of play and how he complements their locker room dynamics.

With the first games under his belt as the Avalanche's netminder, including his debut match with 37 saves leading to victory against Nashville, the team is hopeful for what he brings to the table. His solid numbers and resilience reflect the kind of netminder the team needs to bolster their championship ambitions.

While the market is tough and contracts usually come with risk, the Avalanche’s confidence stems from years of data. Blackwood’s potential and past performances have shown he can thrive if properly supported by defense—an area expected to improve under Colorado’s coaching staff.

Looking forward to the remainder of the season, the Avalanche's decision to lock Blackwood extends their championship window, with their previous issues between the posts seemingly resolved. The franchise has made it clear their commitment to success and to maintain their competitive edge.

Fans and analysts alike are now watching closely to see how Blackwood's performance pans out over the stretch of this contract and beyond. If these early returns indicate the beginning of something special, Colorado has made prime decisions to reclaim their previously dominant standing within the league.

The Avalanche currently hover around 21 wins, 15 losses, with Blackwood cementing his role as they aim for the postseason. The organization is definitely committing to fierce competition, reiteratively showcasing their serious intent for another extended playoff run. How this plays out will significantly affect not just this season, but their future results as well.
