Hong Kong Customs Arrest Two For Smuggling 'Space Oil'

Seventeen-year-old girl and thirty-two-year-old man nabbed at Lok Ma Chau for drug possession.

Hong Kong Customs has recently thwarted attempts to smuggle drugs across the border, culminating in two significant arrests over the weekend. On July 27 and 28, at the Lok Ma Chau Control Point and the Lok Ma Chau Spur Line Control Point respectively, officers detained two individuals for allegedly carrying ether, the principal ingredient of what is colloquially known as 'space oil.'

The first incident involved a 17-year-old local girl, who was intercepted by customs officers on her way to Mainland China. During the routine search of her handbag, authorities discovered one suspected 'space oil' cartridge along with related smoking paraphernalia. The customs officials did not hesitate to arrest her, marking the beginning of what was to be another straightforward bust for the department.

The following day, another operation yielded results as officers apprehended a 32-year-old man at the nearby Lok Ma Chau Spur Line Control Point. Similar to the case of the young girl, he was subjected to inspection, during which customs officers found three suspected 'space oil' cartridges hidden within the specially sewn pocket of his jeans. This creative evasion did not fool the trained customs personnel, who remain vigilant against such attempted smuggling practices.

After the arrests, both suspects were granted bail but are now facing potential legal troubles. Under the Pharmacy and Poison Ordinance, possessing any substance categorized as hazardous without appropriate licensing can lead to substantial penalties. If convicted, each individual may be subject to fines amounting to HKD 100,000, as well as imprisonment for up to two years.

These recent busts highlight the continuous efforts by Hong Kong Customs to crack down on illegal drug trafficking, particularly the smuggling of potent narcotics across its borders. Both cases are still under investigation, with customs officials urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities.

According to the Pharmacy and Poison Ordinance, "any individual possessing any poison listed under Part 1 of the schedule without the necessary regulations is committing an offense," as stated by sources from HKET. The emphasis on adherence to these rules reinforces the significance of public safety measures and the seriousness with which authorities treat drug-related offenses.

Meanwhile, the arrested individuals await the outcome of their cases, which may set precedents for future handling of similar drug offenses. The community remains alert to the threats posed by illegal substances, increasingly aware of the health risks associated with such recreational drugs, often misrepresented or glamorized as harmless.

The persistent battle against drug trafficking remains at the forefront of law enforcement's agenda, with these arrests serving as recent reminders of both the creativity of smugglers and the diligence of inspectors. With the investigation still underway, authorities will continue to address these challenges head-on, ensuring the safety and well-being of the community.
