Himachal Pradesh Faces Weather Emergency Amid Heavy Snow And Rain

Orange alert issued as heavy precipitation impacts travel and utilities across the state.

Heavy snow and rain have been causing significant disruptions across Himachal Pradesh, prompting the local Meteorological Department to issue an orange alert for several districts on March 3, 2025. The alert indicates the possibility of severe weather events, including thunderstorms, lightning, and heavy precipitation, raising concerns for residents and local authorities alike.

According to the meteorological reports, the alert was issued primarily for the regions of Chamba, Kangra, and Lahaul and Spiti, following the cumulative effects of heavy snowfall and rainfall recorded from February 26 to 28. “The orange alert has been issued for Chamba, Kangra, Lahaul and Spiti on March 3 due to the cumulative effects of previous heavy snowfall and rain,” noted officials. The situation remains precarious as the state seeks to recover from earlier extreme weather events.

On March 3, the weather remained dry initially, but temperatures soared, providing brief respite from the harsh conditions. Meanwhile, Revenue Minister Jagat Singh Negi confirmed, “Restoration works continued in full swing even on Sunday,” highlighting the proactive measures taken to restore infrastructure. Despite current efforts, 365 roads and three national highways remain closed, affecting travel and transport across the region.

The repercussions of the weather have extended beyond transportation. An alarming number of 1,377 power transformers have been disrupted along with 269 water supply schemes, leaving several communities facing utility challenges. Reports indicated some areas experienced minor avalanches but, fortunately, without significant casualties or disruptions to life.

One particularly harrowing account involved local resident Sant Ram, who fell near the Jodh Nallah close to Saach within the tribal Pangi valley. Local residents quickly mobilized to rescue him, demonstrating the spirit of community collaboration. “A government helicopter was sent to Saach, and he was airlifted to Kullu and admitted to the hospital,” stated Minister Negi, assuring the public of the swift action taken to assist victims of weather-related incidents.

Across various locations, varying amounts of rain have been recorded. Areas such as Aghar, Pachhad, Jaton Barrage, Kufri, and Chamba experienced rainfall totals between 2 mm and 17 mm, contrasting sharply with the predominantly dry conditions elsewhere. Despite the initial dry weather, the state braced for incoming precipitation, and the Meteorological Department warned of varying degrees of icy conditions.

Looking forward, the Meteorological Department anticipates light to moderate snow or rain on March 3, with moderate snowfall expected on March 4. Subsequently, it projected a shift to dry weather from March 5 through March 8. Residents have been urged to stay vigilant, prepared, and heed local authority warnings as more severe weather approaches.

“The weather alert is not just precautionary; it’s imperative for ensuring the safety and readiness of our communities,” emphasized meteorological experts. They highlighted the significance of local advisories and the necessity for residents to evaluate travel plans, particularly as conditions deteriorate.

The repercussions of earlier weather events linger, as over 157 roads, including the three national highways closed earlier due to snow, have inspired communities to come together, focusing on mutual support. Together with service providers, the local administration is addressing the needs of those affected, ensuring any services disrupted are restored swiftly for the residents.

This period of weather upheaval is serving as both a challenge and reminder of community resilience. Preparation for adverse conditions is more than just about the weather; it’s about fostering strength through collective action and keeping each other safe.

With the orange alert ringing through the valley, authorities are working closely with communities to mitigate disruptions as best as they can, setting the stage for continued efforts to restore normalcy and maintain transparency during this challenging time.
