Himachal Pradesh Faces Heavy Snowfall Disruptions

Extreme weather conditions impact daily life and travel but may benefit local agriculture.

Himachal Pradesh has been grappling with significant weather disruptions, as heavy snowfall blanketed the higher reaches of the state, transforming its mountainous landscapes but also creating challenging conditions for residents and travelers alike.

Since February 20, 2025, regions such as Shimla, Kullu, Kinnaur, Lahaul-Spiti, Chamba, Mandi, Kangra, and Sirmaur have experienced substantial snowfall and rainfall. The Meteorological Department has issued orange alerts for Himachal Pradesh, predicting heavy snowfall and moderate to heavy rainfall.

On Thursday, Shimla and its surrounding areas woke up to thick layers of snow, with reports indicating Shilaru recording the highest snowfall amounts at 5.7 cm. Meanwhile, Baijnath received 9.7 mm of rainfall.

Travel conditions are precarious, particularly along roads leading to popular hill stations like Kufri, Narkanda, and Chopal, which have been rendered impassable. The Atal Tunnel-Rohtang is closed for all types of vehicles due to snow accumulation of 60 cm, cutting off the Lahaul Valley from the rest of the state. Travel advisories urge against unnecessary journeys.

Heavy snowfall led to disruptions across several tribal areas, with over 21 roads blocked, leaving many travelers stranded. Authorities have mobilized the Public Works Department to restore access, emphasizing the importance of ensuring local connectivity amid the extreme weather.

Officials are optimistic about the benefits of the snow for agriculture. Farmers and orchardists anticipate improved apple production due to the favorable moisture conditions stemming from the snowfall. The colder temperatures, ranging 2-4°C below normal, could also support the development of crops.

While snowfall has brought cheer to some sectors, recruitment processes, such as the police recruitment process scheduled for Dharamshala, faced postponement due to continuous rain. Candidates originally scheduled for February 20 will now have to appear on March 7.

Weather conditions saw considerable variation across the state on February 21, with the sun breaking through the clouds on some days, showcasing the region's snow-draped magnificence. The previous 24 hours had led to sub-zero temperatures, but locals are reported to have welcomed the snowfall, appreciating both its aesthetic and agricultural benefits.

The inclement weather is associated with an active western disturbance affecting northwestern India, leading to the forecast of continued snow and rain until February 26. The Met Department has cautioned residents and travelers to remain updated with advisories and to exercise caution during travel.

Seasonal tourism is expected to receive a boost, as snow-laden landscapes entice visitors to the picturesque regions of Himachal Pradesh. With restoration efforts underway, including the clearing of major roads, the local government is taking measures to return to normalcy as soon as possible.

Despite the challenges presented by the heavy snowfall, Himachal Pradesh's natural beauty remains captured and admired under the white blanket. The unique juxtaposition of natural beauty amid logistical concerns showcases the complex relationship between weather and daily life.
