Harley Quinn Showrunner Confirms Series Continues Despite Uncertainty

With the DC Universe evolving, fans are left wondering about the future of 'Harley Quinn' as the creative team remains optimistic for more seasons.

The 'Harley Quinn' series, despite uncertainty surrounding its renewal for a sixth season, is poised to continue due to a combination of strong fan support and the creative team's optimistic outlook. Showrunner Dean Lorey expressed confidence that the fifth season finale is far from the series' conclusion, indicating a desire for more content in interviews.

As the beloved show ended its fifth season on Max, many were left wondering about its status amidst a shifting DC landscape. Since its premiere on November 29, 2019, 'Harley Quinn' has garnered a loyal following for its unique reimagining of iconic characters, weaving tales that diverge from the traditional DC narrative.

In a recent interview with TVLine dated March 22, 2025, Lorey commented on the finale's implications, saying, “Not really. I mean, in my mind, it’s not a series finale. I don’t think any of us making it want it to be a series finale,” which reassured fans that there is a plan for more adventures of Harley and her friends.

As the DC Universe (DCU) evolves under the direction of James Gunn, the fate of 'Harley Quinn' remains uncertain. The creative team acknowledges that while their unique interpretation of the characters is entertaining, it doesn’t necessarily align with the new direction of the DCU. However, having the project designated as an Elseworlds series allows it creative flexibility outside the main continuity.

Yet, despite its success and critical acclaim, 'Harley Quinn' must broaden its appeal to ensure future renewals. While it has captivated its dedicated fanbase, its overall popularity could be limiting. As mentioned by industry insiders, the show is not reaching as wide an audience as it could, which might have implications for its chances of return.

In addition to Harley Quinn's developments, interest in other DC properties is rising, particularly as fans anticipate the arrival of Superman in cinemas this July. There's speculation on how this will impact several ongoing DC projects, including 'Peacemaker,' which is set to return for its second season in August. This spin-off from 'The Suicide Squad' has straddled the line between the previous DCEU and the emerging DCU.

Danielle Brooks, who portrays Leota Adebayo in 'Peacemaker,' discussed the transition in an interview. She remarked on the differences this time around due to the new management. “You know, when we first did Season 1 of Peacemaker, it was during the pandemic, so we didn’t even do press for it. We didn’t have a premiere. The fans took to it, and they loved it. And now, James is taking over the DC Universe, so I don’t know what’s going to happen with Season 2,” she shared. Brooks expressed excitement for the upcoming season while acknowledging the uncertainty that lies ahead.

James Gunn, now overseeing the DC universe, has been known to regard the stories presented in 'Peacemaker' and 'The Suicide Squad' as “unreliable memories” from the old regime, stating that they may or may not be canon moving forward. This indicates a potential for some elements to continue while others might fall by the wayside, depending on how they fit into the overall vision for the DCU.

“We know that Rick Flag Sr. is angry because his son was killed by Peacemaker, so we know that situation happened in the past, we have something to refer to to think of what it might be like that that happened, but that exists as canon because it was mentioned in 'Creature Commandos', not necessarily because it existed in 'Suicide Squad',” Gunn clarified in an earlier statement.

The coming months will likely clarify how various stories, including 'Harley Quinn' and 'Peacemaker', will develop in the ever-changing DCU landscape. While audiences eagerly await updates, the chance for 'Harley Quinn' to continue finding its place within this new cinematic vision remains a topic of speculation.

Fans can only hope that the series will receive a sixth season and that new stories will unfold in the world of Harley Quinn, further delighting viewers with its irreverent humor and refreshing take on DC characters. Meanwhile, the show is available for streaming on Max, allowing new viewers to experience the adventures that have captured so many hearts.
