The admission process under the Right to Education (RTE) Act has officially begun across private schools in Gujarat, marking the onset of significant opportunities for students from economically weaker sections. Parents have until March 12, 2025, to apply for approximately 14,778 seats available across around 1,300 private institutions, particularly within Ahmedabad, as reported by IANS.
Every year, the Directorate of Primary Education conducts this RTE admission process before the start of the academic year. The scheme allows children from urban families with annual incomes up to ₹1.5 lakh to gain admission to private schools as per the government norms. Importantly, the RTE regulations require 25% of seats at these schools to be reserved for students coming from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Authorities have emphasized the need for parents to fill out admission forms with utmost care, as many have faced difficulties with document uploads and school selections, especially when relying on cyber cafés. "Parents are advised to fill out application forms carefully and upload required documents to avoid issues," said IANS.
Unfortunately, fraudulent admissions under the RTE quota have become a pressing concern. Authorities have warned parents against submitting false documents, stating, "Submitting false documents will result in severe consequences, including admission cancellation and potential legal action," according to Times Now. Such strict warnings stem from multiple reports of fraud, where families submitted fake income certificates to secure admissions for their children.
Last year, for example, 200 students lost their places after being discovered as ineligible due to fabricated income documents. During investigations launched by the District Education Officer (DEO), it was revealed in November 2023, 140 parents were found to have used falsified certificates to attain RTE admissions. This spurred the cancellation of these fraudulent admissions, restoring chances for deserving students.
Investigations by the DEO also raised alarms when concerns emerged about 308 students whose admissions were obtained under questionable circumstances. By early January 2024, hearings were initiated for these parents, with investigations culminating by mid-February 2024. Out of these, 170 admissions were officially annulled following extensive inquiries.
Given these circumstances, authorities are taking vigilant measures to maintain the integrity of the admission process. Parents are warned to be cautious of cyber café operators or agents who may promise guaranteed admissions for money. Instances of deceit not only undermine the RTE initiative but also jeopardize educational opportunities for genuinely needy children.
