Greggs Urgently Recalls Steak Bakes Over Health Risk

Some packs mistakenly contained undeclared sulphites, posing danger to consumers.

Greggs, one of the UK’s largest bakery chains, has issued an urgent recall for its popular steak bakes after it was revealed some packs contain sausage, bean and cheese melts instead. This packaging error means the product has undeclared sulphites, which can pose significant health risks to individuals with sensitivities.

The recall affects only the two-pack frozen steak bakes sold exclusively at Iceland supermarkets, with the specific best-before date of May 19, 2025. The move follows concerns raised by the UK’s Food Standards Agency (FSA), highlighting the potential dangers for consumers who may react adversely to sulphur dioxide or sulphites, compounds commonly used as preservatives.

The Food Standards Agency announced the recall on January 21, 2025, urging customers not to consume the affected products. "Greggs is recalling Greggs two pack Steak Bake because it contains sulphites which are not declared on the label," the FSA said. They outlined how the error occurred and pointed out the importance of accurate labeling to avoid placing sensitive individuals at risk.

Sulphites are often added to foods and drinks to prevent spoilage and maintain color but can trigger allergic reactions, especially among people with asthma or breathing difficulties. Symptoms can range from mild reactions to more serious issues, including difficulty breathing and even anaphylaxis, though such severe reactions are rare according to Allergy UK.

Customers who purchased the affected packs are advised to return them to their nearest Iceland store for a full refund. "If you have purchased the above product please do not consume it,“ Greggs stated, emphasizing their commitment to consumer safety. "Please return it to your nearest Iceland store for a full refund."

Greggs has taken proactive measures by contacting relevant allergy support organizations to spread awareness of the recall among their members. They also provided point-of-sale notices across their stores to guide consumers on what to do if they have bought the steak bakes.

The company has expressed its regret over the incident, with representatives saying, "We are very sorry for any inconvenience caused." They reassured customers about their commitment to food safety and responsible practices within the food industry.

This recall is particularly important considering the significant percentage of the population with sulphite sensitivities—approximately 1-2%—and even higher figures among those with asthma, with rates estimated at 5-10%. Such recalls highlight the constant vigilance required within the food industry to safeguard consumer health.

According to the FSA, the process of product recalls is necessary when there is evidence of health risks due to mislabeling or contamination. The organization stressed the need for food products to be accurately labeled and for companies to maintain stringent quality control measures to prevent consumer health risks.

The public is encouraged to remain informed about food recalls and alerts issued by health agencies. Customers should check their pantries and returns any suspicious products to prevent exposure to harmful allergens.

For any additional information or inquiries about the recall, customers can contact Greggs Customer Care at 08081 473 447 or via email at [email protected]. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of food safety and the responsibility of food companies to their consumers.
