The January ballot for the Great North Run 2025 has officially opened, offering running enthusiasts their final opportunity to secure a place in the iconic event. The world’s largest half marathon, which has drawn tens of thousands of participants from around the globe, is set to take place on Sunday, September 7, 2025.
From 10am on January 6, participants can enter the ballot until January 15 at 2pm. With only ten days for applications, interest is expected to be high as eager runners jump at the chance to be part of this celebrated occasion.
Paul Foster, Chief Executive of the Great Run Company, expressed his excitement about the ballot's opening. “We’re excited to open the January ballot and begin the countdown for the 44th Great North Run. We’re looking forward to celebrating tens of thousands of incredible runners from across the country and the globe, as they achieve personal goals and raise much-needed funds for good causes,” he said.
Last year’s event saw approximately 60,000 entrants tackle the thrilling 13.1-mile route stretching from Newcastle to South Shields. According to estimates, the event raised about £25 million for various charities, showcasing the spirit of community and support surrounding the marathon.
This year's ballot marks the second and final opportunity for individuals to secure entry, following an earlier ballot held last September. Many participants use the Great North Run as motivation to achieve their fitness goals, and some opt to run for charities dear to their hearts.
“Each year we’re amazed how the whole of the North East gets behind and celebrates the event to create a truly special occasion,” continued Foster. “I encourage everyone to enter the January ballot for the chance to experience the incredible atmosphere and roaring crowd support for themselves.”
The Great North Run is not only about individual achievements, but it's also about making significant contributions to society. Participants often fundraise for various causes, including charities focused on health awareness, disease research, and community development. Recently, inspiring stories have surfaced from the event, including those of families running to honor loved ones affected by illnesses.
The impact of this event extends far beyond the start and finish lines. It brings together people of all backgrounds and experiences, uniting them for collective goals of health, charity, and camaraderie.
For many, crossing the finish line signifies more than just completing the race; it symbolizes resilience, personal strength, and unity within communities. Each participant has their own story, and the atmosphere during race day is often described as electric.
After the ballot closes on January 15, successful applicants will be notified by email, confirming their place for the marathon. Plans are underway to make the 2025 event the most memorable yet, with emphasis placed on enhancing the celebratory experience for all.
The thrill doesn’t end at the finish line. For those unable to attend, the event enjoys significant international exposure; it will be broadcast live on BBC One and aired in over 169 territories worldwide, bringing the spirit of the North East's iconic marathon to audiences far and wide.
