Brightline Train Collides With Fire Truck, Injuring 15

Chaos ensues as fire truck crosses tracks with lowered gates, prompting investigations and safety concerns.

A shocking incident unfolded on December 28 when a Brightline passenger train collided with a fire truck from Delray Beach, resulting in injuries to 15 individuals, including three firefighters. Video released by Brightline captures the moment the speeding train barreled down the tracks as the fire truck, apparently ignoring lowered crossing gates, crossed directly onto the tracks.

The collision, which occurred on Southeast First Street just south of Atlantic Avenue, left the fire truck almost completely destroyed, illustrating the severity of the impact. Images revealed the train's front was significantly damaged, coming to halt approximately one block after the crash. Fortunately, the firefighters were reported to be stable at the hospital, and the remaining passengers, who suffered minor injuries, were also taken for treatment.

Witnesses described the chaos during the crash. Randy Fitzgerald, who was seated at the front of the Brightline train, recalled, “It became total chaos, I didn’t know what was happening... I see debris flying out the window, glasses shattering, people are screaming, things are falling from the ceiling.” He added, “My arms are a little bit sore from slamming against the table.”

According to the Palm Beach County Fire Rescue, 12 passengers and three firefighters were transported to various hospitals following the crash. Delray Beach Fire Rescue admitted there was a service call at the time, but it remains unclear if the truck was responding to the emergency when the accident occurred.

Video evidence from Brightline revealed at least one crossing gate was down as the fire truck approached the tracks, hinting at potential negligence on the part of the fire crew. “Railroad safety is a community wide effort,” the rail company commented, urging the public not to drive around lowered crossing gates for safety.

Kevin Keller, a resident of Delray Beach, expressed his disbelief: “I don’t know how a vehicle was on the train track, especially not a fire truck.” Such sentiments echo concerns about adherence to safety protocols by emergency response teams.

The incident has prompted investigations from both the Federal Railroad Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board, the latter of which is currently collecting information about the collision. A spokesperson confirmed they had not yet decided whether to open a formal investigation.

Meanwhile, Delray Beach Fire Rescue has placed four employees, including Assistant Chief Kevin Green and Division Chief Todd Lynch, on administrative leave with pay. This measure is pending the completion of an internal investigation to ascertain compliance with city protocols and fire rescue policies.

Witness accounts reflect the heavy toll of the accident and the need for careful review of safety measures. “The scene just keeps replaying in my mind... the sound, glass shattering, people screaming around me, seeing the man next to me bleeding,” Fitzgerald recounted, highlighting the panic triggered by the collision.

This event is not the first involving Brightline; earlier this year, two fatal incidents involving the same trains occurred along the Miami to Orlando route, prompting safety discussions about high-speed rail interactions with emergency vehicles. The community is now left questioning the competence of those entrusted with safety and how such accidents can be prevented moving forward.

The chaos depicted vividly through eyewitness illustrations and official responses brings to light the pressing need for improved training protocols for both rail safety and emergency response to avert future calamities.
