"Our perfect project is unimaginably difficult and everyone else looks at it and thinks it’s impossible," Howard admitted, highlighting the daunting nature of their undertaking.
In February 2023, nearly a year into the project, Howard and Sarah began fabricating 16 polystyrene floats at a workshop in Sussex, utilizing 200 square meters of the material and 400 liters of polyurethane glue. The glue, activated by spraying water, is crucial for connecting the blocks of polystyrene that form the base of their floating home. However, the couple quickly encountered a setback when they discovered that the blocks had not been cut accurately, complicating the assembly process.
Despite the challenges, Howard expressed optimism about their innovative approach. He noted their use of 'surfboard technology' in the construction process, emphasizing that it allows for a lightweight design that can be easily transported and assembled. "We can make them in a workshop which means we can control the quality, and it also manages the cost because we aren’t having to rent a huge shipyard to make it in one piece," he explained.
Kevin McCloud, who has witnessed countless ambitious builds over the years, described this project as one of the most dramatic he has encountered. He remarked, "The radical ethos of this project is hardcore self-build territory," indicating the level of commitment and innovation required from Howard and Sarah.
The couple is not only focused on the structural integrity of their home but also on creating a comfortable living environment. Their design includes a spacious open-plan living area with an outer deck, a home office, and a cinema room, catering to their family's needs. The couple's teenage children will also have accommodations within the floating home, making it a family-oriented project.

In June 2023, they found themselves still in the early stages of construction, with only the first floats and steel beams on-site, far behind their initial schedule.

Despite the setbacks, Howard remains determined to see their vision realized, stating, "We need that combination of difficult and marvellous."
