This work is currently underway as we continue to invest significantly in the company's largest priorities and the extensive opportunities lying ahead," said a company spokesperson to CNBC.

Simultaneously, Google is grappling with challenges involving AI's transformative effect on online search methodologies, spurred by new functionalities and features brought forth by AI initiatives. For over two decades, traditional search engines like Google have provided users with simple textual search results, strictly requiring clicks to access information from various sites. Yet, with recent advancements, AI-generated summaries and responses mean users might find answers directly presented on search result pages, diminishing the need to visit original content sources.

This evolution has raised concerns within affected industries. Educational tech firm Chegg has taken legal action against Google, citing decreased traffic and revenue losses attributed to the AI-driven changes adversely affecting how educational content is utilized online. Chegg reported a staggering 24% revenue drop year-on-year for Q4 2024, firmly pressing their argument against Google. "Google is reaping the financial benefits of Chegg's content without having to spend a dime," the lawsuit claims.

According to Google, the company intends to defend itself vigorously against the allegations. A spokesperson underlined, "Google sends billions of clicks to websites daily," contending the AI-generated overviews diversify rather than diminish traffic distribution to different sites. Aleksandra Urman, a University of Zurich researcher specializing in search engines, stated, "It’s going to be interesting to see what happens, particularly as we have seen numerous content creators expressing fears about losing traffic. SEO expert Lily Ray added, "While Google has always displayed summarized content, these AI overviews push the limits by rewriting content from external sites, positioning Google increasingly as a publisher rather than merely as a search engine."
