Television icon Gloria Hunniford has opened up about her significant diet changes and health decisions made after receiving grave news from her GP about being pre-diabetic. The 84-year-old presenter, known for her stint on Loose Women, shared her experience and new approach to eating during an intimate conversation with Woman's Weekly. "I'd dieted before, but going on a medical diet gives you determination," she stated, highlighting the seriousness of her situation.
After years of trying various diets, Hunniford revealed it was her medical diagnosis—prompted by her doctor’s warning—that compelled her to stick to healthier choices. "My doctor said I was pre-diabetic and told me to take my life in my hands," she recounted, reflecting on the moment she decided to prioritize her well-being. This wake-up call has led her to alter her eating habits extensively.
Describing her meals, Gloria noted, "I'll have egg or sausage for breakfast, but no bread. It's soup or salad with fish for lunch, and in the evening, I'll replace potatoes with cauliflower, which has the same sort of crunch." By cutting out sugar, bread, pasta, and potatoes, she has embraced food options focused on proteins and vegetables, demonstrating her commitment to maintaining her health.
The changes come against the backdrop of significant personal loss. Gloria lost herhusband Stephen Way last August, after 25 years of marriage. The effects of his passing resonate deeply, with the esteemed broadcaster expressing, "Stephen was a gentleman and a giant of a man, who will leave the most enormous void not only in my life but our entire family." Their enduring bond and shared memories highlight the emotional challenges Hunniford faces as she navigates her grief.
Returning to the Loose Women panel for the first time since Stephen’s death, Gloria was visibly affected by the changes in her life. "I want to thank all of you at home and everybody at Loose Women, because the messages were just fabulous. I can't tell you what they mean in the end," she shared, expressing gratitude for the support during this trying time. Despite her struggles, she noted, "I'm determined not to cry today; I'm trying not to cry," underscoring the depth of her grief and the complexity of returning to public life.
Gloria admitted the weight of her emotional turmoil has affected her physical state. "Of course, I've lost weight because you don't eat properly and you're always thinking about the other person," she explained, showcasing how Stephen’s illness impacted her dietary habits. Yet, she remains hopeful and is grateful for the care shown by her sons, Paul and Michael, who have stepped up during this period of change. They monitor her health choices, reminding her to take care of herself during the grieving process.
Even with her disciplined regimen, Gloria allows herself small indulgences. She mentioned enjoying the odd glass of wine or champagne, blending the importance of dietary responsibility with the joy of living. Ellen empathetically pointed out how some people confuse such indulgences with seriousness, stating, "The thing is obviously when your partner is ill, the anxiety and worry... you tend not to eat properly." Hunniford is candid about the mental burden of losing her life partner and acknowledges the emotional rollercoaster she endures.
Hunniford's resilience continues to shine through as she tackles both her new dietary restrictions and the various everyday challenges of life after loss. She remains optimistic about the future, admitting, "It obviously changed my life. It's amazing how sometimes your children become the parents because they take worry about you." Through these heartfelt admissions, Gloria authenticates her story and inspires others who may be facing similar health or emotional challenges.
She fondly remembers the beautiful moments with her late husband, stating, "We had a tremendously happy marriage and did so many beautiful and exciting things together." Each day is now an opportunity for Hunniford to cherish those memories, coupled with a renewed commitment to her health, making strides to lead the best life possible for herself and to honor Stephen's legacy.
