This year’s edition, organized by RCS Sport, runs through the picturesque Abruzzo region until April 18, featuring four demanding stages and a total distance of 613 km with a staggering elevation gain of approximately 9,600 meters.

The first stage, covering 151 km, presented a challenging profile with two categorized climbs, notably the Bocca di Valle, which stretches 11.9 km at an average gradient of 5.2%. The final ascent, just 1 km from the finish line, posed a steep challenge with sections reaching 10%, providing an excellent opportunity for punchers to make their mark.

As the riders approached the finish in Crecchio, it was Alessandro Covi from UAE Team Emirates who emerged victorious, clocking in at 3 hours, 34 minutes, and 0 seconds. Covi’s performance showcased his climbing prowess, as he navigated the tough terrain expertly. Following closely was Luca Colnaghi from VF Group – Bardiani CSF – Faizanè, finishing just 4 seconds behind, while Alessandro Fancellu from JCL Team Ukyo secured third place, 6 seconds adrift of Covi.

Stage 2, set for tomorrow, will see the riders tackle a 138 km route from Tocco da Casauria to Penne. This stage is expected to be equally challenging, featuring several unclassified climbs that could favor aggressive riders and breakaway attempts. The final ascent to Penne, with a gradient of 5%, will likely determine who can seize the advantage early in the race.

Stage 3, scheduled for Thursday, April 17, is anticipated to be the queen stage of the Giro d’Abruzzo, with a demanding 160 km course from San Demetrio ne’ Vestini to Roccaraso (Aremogna). This stage includes a summit finish with a 16.2 km climb averaging 5.3%, presenting a critical opportunity for climbers to assert themselves as contenders for the overall title.

The final stage on Friday, April 18, will take the riders from Corropoli to Isola del Gran Sasso (Santuario di San Gabriele) over 164 km. This stage is expected to be a climber’s delight, with an elevation profile that suits both puncheurs and climbers, including the ascent of Sparazzano, which is 6.2 km long with an average gradient of 4.3%.
