Car-Freitag Kicks Off Nürburgring Season Amid Police Vigilance

Thousands of car enthusiasts expected as police prepare for increased traffic and safety checks

As the sun rises on Good Friday, April 18, 2025, the Nürburgring transforms into a vibrant hub for car enthusiasts, marking the unofficial start of the open-air season. Dubbed "Car-Freitag," this annual event draws thousands of tuners, vintage car fans, and hobby racers eager to showcase their prized vehicles on the iconic racetrack. With the expected influx of visitors, police in Mayen are gearing up for an increase in traffic, not just on the day itself but throughout the Easter weekend.

According to local authorities, the weather forecast for the day is less than ideal, predicting windy conditions, rain, and temperatures dipping to around 6 degrees Celsius, which is a couple of degrees colder than the previous day. Some reports even suggest the possibility of sleet in the morning, raising questions about how well the dedicated automotive enthusiasts will brave the elements.

Despite the weather, anticipation is high. The Nürburgring is expected to welcome several thousand visitors, both in vehicles and on foot. Most parking spaces in the A-Zone will be open, with additional options available in the B-Zone. Key parking areas at the Nordschleife, such as Brünnchen and Pflanzgarten, will also be accessible. However, attendees should be prepared for potential traffic jams, especially in the main access roads to the Nürburgring, in the town of Adenau, and in surrounding areas.

The police have issued warnings regarding traffic regulations, emphasizing that they will be conducting enhanced controls on the day of the event. Their focus will be on ensuring road safety, particularly concerning unregistered or unauthorized modifications to vehicles. "Whoever behaves inappropriately in the Nürburgring area can expect strict penalties for traffic violations, which could lead to all-day bans or vehicle seizures," stated a spokesperson for the police.

As part of their efforts, police will be operating under the motto "Red for Racers, Posers and Illegal Tuning," conducting checks specifically aimed at illegal vehicle modifications that could compromise safety or violate emissions standards. Drivers found to be unfit to drive will be reported to the driver's license authority, which could result in license revocation. Furthermore, any unauthorized modifications could lead to the expiration of the vehicle's operating license, meaning insurance coverage would also be voided.

In addition to the local police presence, a special control group trained to identify illegal vehicle alterations will be deployed at the Nürburgring. "Manipulations to cars can lead to loss of control, which could result in serious accidents," the police spokesperson warned. This heightened vigilance aims to maintain safety and order during what many consider the kickoff of the automotive season.

While illegal street racing is generally not a major concern at the Nürburgring during Car-Freitag, police anticipate significant traffic congestion due to the high volume of visitors. To mitigate this, some roundabouts will be temporarily closed to facilitate smoother traffic flow. The police are keen to remind all participants to adhere to traffic rules and to keep emergency access routes clear.

The operation has been referred to internally as "SE Karfreitag" (Special Operation Good Friday), indicating the level of preparation and manpower dedicated to managing the event. This year, the police will also extend their controls beyond the Nürburgring, with additional checks planned in the Rheinhessen and Palatinate regions.

As the day unfolds, the atmosphere at the Nürburgring promises to be electric, with car enthusiasts undeterred by the weather, eager to share their passion for automobiles. For many, Car-Freitag is not just a day of racing; it’s a celebration of car culture and community.

With the stage set and the engines revving, the Nürburgring is poised to once again become the epicenter of automotive enthusiasm this Good Friday. As attendees prepare to navigate the challenges of inclement weather and increased police presence, one thing is clear: the spirit of Car-Freitag is alive and well, ready to kick off another season of thrilling drives and unforgettable memories.
