Game Informer Rises Again With New Ownership And Staff

After being abruptly shut down, the beloved gaming magazine returns to celebrate its legacy and future in gaming journalism.

Game Informer is back, marking a triumphant return for one of the longest-running video game magazines after being abruptly shut down by GameStop last August. On March 25, 2025, Editor-in-Chief Matt Miller announced that the entire staff from before the closure would return, along with the magazine’s website and archives, which are back online.

Game Informer had been a cornerstone of video game journalism since its launch in 1991, providing a platform for news, reviews, and insights into the gaming industry. Its closure in August 2024 came as a shock to both staff and fans, particularly as they were reportedly “70% done” with the next issue. The abrupt decision left many wondering about the fate of one of their favorite sources for gaming news.

However, the magazine has been given a “new lease on life” after being acquired by Gunzilla Games, a studio co-founded by Hollywood director Neill Blomkamp, well-known for films like District 9. Gunzilla has expressed a commitment to maintaining the editorial integrity that Game Informer is known for, allowing the team complete independence in covering the gaming landscape. “We are proud to welcome the talented voices behind Game Informer in the Gunzilla Games family, and join their fight to preserve the heart of video game journalism in what has been a tumultuous time for the industry,” said Gunzilla’s CEO, Vlad Korolov.

While announcing the return of Game Informer, Miller highlighted that the new owners insisted on the importance of editorial freedom. “Editorial independence has been foundational for Game Informer ever since it was started back in the 90s, and it will continue to be a sacred element of our operation going forward,” he affirmed. This reassurance has been welcomed by both the staff and the publication's readers, who have long treasured its unbiased reporting.

Game Informer’s website is currently live again, featuring both a repository of past content and new articles that were written during its hiatus. The team has actively ensured that readers haven’t missed out on critical game releases, with reviews of more than two dozen titles having been published, along with their belated Best of 2024 list.

Miller noted that the print magazine will also make a comeback, with plans to enhance the publication's format and content depth. He expressed a strong desire for the magazine to return “bigger and better than it was before.” In addition to the print edition, Game Informer will introduce memberships and subscriptions, enhancing the reader experience with additional benefits. Details about subscription options and memberships are expected to be released shortly.

Game Informer is stepping into a dynamic and rapidly evolving gaming landscape with promise and ambition. As noted by senior video editor Alex Van Aken, the returning staff not only will focus on the revival of the publication’s core offerings but is also receiving significant raises and long-overdue promotions. This fresh motivation is likely to be reflected in their coverage and overall output.

Gunzilla Games is not just acquiring a magazine; it is embracing a community of passionate gamers and dedicated journalists. Their first title, Off the Grid, is a free-to-play extraction shooter currently in early access, which features an optional NFT element. However, the focus remains steadfastly on high-quality gaming journalism rather than becoming mired in the controversies surrounding such trends.

As the industry holds its breath for more details, one thing is certain: the return of Game Informer is a bright spot for gaming journalism. The publication aims to celebrate the history and future of video games, spotlighting both gamers and the creators at work. “Our intent is to continue to focus on highlighting the coolest games, celebrating the history and legacy of the gaming industry, and shining a spotlight on the creators and players who are charting its future,” Miller stated.

With great enthusiasm from both its new owners and the dedicated staff, Game Informer stands poised to reclaim its position within the gaming journalism landscape. Expect coverage that dives into the most anticipated games of 2025 and beyond, alongside nostalgic looks at revered titles from the past. The future looks exciting as Game Informer embarks on this new chapter, reconnecting with its audience and reaffirming its commitment to delivering exceptional game journalism.
