Fujifilm Unveils GFX100RF: A Game-Changer In Photography

The first lens-integrated medium format model combines portability and high-performance features for photographers on the go.

On March 20, 2025, Fujifilm unveiled its latest advance in photography technology with the announcement of the FUJIFILM GFX100RF at the highly anticipated 'X Summit Prague 2025.' This sophisticated camera marks a significant milestone in the GFX series as it is the first lens-integrated model to hit the market, combining cutting-edge features with a remarkably compact design.

The GFX100RF packs a remarkable 102-megapixel medium format sensor, which corresponds to a full-size equivalent of a 28mm lens, offering exceptional photographic capabilities. Weighing in at just 735 grams, this camera is not only lightweight but also embodies the perfect blend of innovative design and high functionality.

Designed with an aluminum milling body, the GFX100RF is available in two striking colors: silver and black. At an estimated price of 830,500 yen in Japan, it is slated for release on April 10, 2025. This launch is set to capture the interest of both amateur and professional photographers seeking high-quality imagery without the bulk typically associated with large format cameras.

Unlike previous iterations in the GFX series, which were typically lens-interchangeable models, the GFX100RF is designed with a fixed lens configuration. The included 'Super EBC GF 35mm F4' lens comprises ten elements in eight groups, including two aspherical lenses, thus allowing photographers to capture high-quality images with rich tonal detail and impressive depth of field.

In terms of physical dimensions, the GFX100RF measures 133.5mm in width, 90.4mm in height, and 76.5mm in depth, making it more compact than its predecessor, the GFX100S II, which is bulkier at 150mm x 104.2mm x 87.2mm while weighing 883 grams. This reduction in size of nearly 148 grams showcases Fujifilm's commitment to creating devices that are easier to handle while still delivering outstanding performance.

The GFX100RF brings forward advancements in autofocus technology, featuring an intelligent hybrid autofocus system that combines phase detection and contrast detection. This enables the camera to track moving subjects with precision, an essential capability for wildlife and sports photography. Moreover, users can tap into AI-driven subject recognition that accurately identifies animals, vehicles, and other subjects, enhancing the camera's versatility.

Another highlight of the GFX100RF is its digital teleconverter, which allows users to switch between various focal lengths of 28mm, 36mm, 50mm, and 63mm. This adaptability opens new avenues for photographers looking to capture a range of shots without requiring multiple lenses.

Furthermore, the GFX100RF retains robust video capabilities, supporting 4K video recording at 30 frames per second. It enables 10-bit recording in the 4:2:2 format, and the inclusion of the 13-stop F-Log2 capabilities aids in capturing more dynamic range for video production.

Along with these features, Fujifilm has equipped the GFX100RF with a newly designed 3.15-inch tilting touch screen LCD monitor with 2.1 million dots, providing a user-friendly interface that enhances the shooting experience. Users can easily navigate various settings and review their shots seamlessly.

The camera also supports wireless communication through Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 4.2, ensuring that sharing and transferring images is quick and efficient.

With its high-quality specifications and innovative design aesthetics, the GFX100RF aims to elevate the standards for photographers who covet both portability and power. It is a compelling option for those looking to step into the realm of medium format photography without the baggage of conventionality.

As Fujifilm raises the bar in the digital camera realm, this latest release signifies not merely a new product but a significant evolution in the approach to photography that emphasizes quality, convenience, and creativity.
