Fortnite Returns To Europe As Epic Games Launches Own App Store

Epic Games bypasses Apple and Google with new store following years of legal battles and regulatory changes

Epic Games, the developer behind the globally popular game Fortnite, has made headlines again by launching its own app store, allowing players to download games directly to their mobile devices. This significant move follows Epic's long-standing battle against tech giants Apple and Google, who currently dominate the mobile app market. The new Epic Games Store will now be available for both Android and European iOS users.

The implementation of this store signifies a pivotal shift facilitated by Europe's new Digital Markets Act (DMA), which requires platforms like Apple to permit alternative app stores on their devices. This law aims to break the monopolistic practices seen within the app ecosystem, ensuring developers have more freedom and options to reach gamers directly.

Tim Sweeney, CEO of Epic Games, expressed excitement about this development, saying, "We're very happy to be on the verge of launching our games on iOS and Android, enabled by Europe's new DMA law." This new law mandates significant changes from Apple and Google, allowing Epic Games to skirt around their app stores for distribution.

The Epic Games Store is expected to showcase not only Fortnite but also other popular titles such as Rocket League Sideswipe and Fall Guys. During the launch event, Sweeney emphasized the broader implications of this initiative, stating, "This is just the beginning of a long effort to bring our games back to all these platforms worldwide, and the fight's not over until Fortnite is back on iOS everywhere and free of Apple's taxes."

Fortnite's saga with Apple began back in 2020 when Epic attempted to implement its payment system within the game, bypassing Apple's steep 30% fee on all transactions. Apple responded by removing Fortnite from its app store, which set off a series of legal battles culminating in the U.S. Supreme Court's decision not to hear Epic’s appeal against Apple’s practices. This decision effectively ended Epic's legal aspirations within the U.S. justice system, but it fueled their determination to expand internationally.

Despite the DMA's opening up of the market, obstacles remain. Epic has faced substantial challenges installing its store on Apple devices, with regulatory hurdles complicatively intertwined with the platform's restrictive requirements. Sweeney criticized these obstacles, stating, "The only thing standing in our way is going to be the friction Apple and Google put in front of us, and it's pretty significant." He reiterated this sentiment, noting how cumbersome the process is to install the Epic Games Store due to lengthy procedures and confusing device settings.

The European Union's internal market commissioner, Thierry Breton, applauded the development on social media platforms, underscoring the importance of competition, stating, "Yes, gamers, Europe means more #FREEDOM & choice!" The DMA reflects changing attitudes toward digital markets, aiming to democratize access and allow innovative companies like Epic to flourish.

Apple, on the other hand, has responded to these changes with caution, insisting on the need for stringent security measures to safeguard consumers. The tech giant maintains its stance, emphasizing their fees support maintaining high quality and secure environments for users. "The DMA required us to enable new capabilities for developers in the EU, and we have worked to make them as easy as possible for users," Apple stated.

Strikingly, European users will have access to the Epic Games Store before its rollout to the U.K., where legal frameworks similar to the DMA have yet to prevail. While iOS users across Europe celebrate the return of Fortnite to their devices, others remain left out of the action.

Epic aims for an ambitious target of achieving 100 million installs of its app store by the end of 2025, as they seek to persuade developers with lucrative revenue-sharing terms. Currently, developers are required to give up to 30 percent of their earnings to Apple or Google, which Epic hopes to challenge by providing more appealing terms to those who join its platform.

Despite the launch, the continuation of Epic's challenges with Apple is far from over. Subsequent to the store's announcement, Apple reinstated its blockade on Epic's developer account, accusing the company of being “verifiably untrustworthy.” This decision could potentially hinder Epic's ability to engage fully with the iOS platform.

On the flip side, Epic continues to rally support with its advocacy for developers' rights to earn fair compensation and have access to the resources they need to flourish. "We are continuing to fight... around the globe to eliminate the anti-competitive terms... to build a viable store for everyone," stated Sweeney.

The launch of the Epic Games Store not only reinvigorates Fortnite's presence within mobile gaming, but it serves as a bellwether for the future of app marketplaces—one characterized by increased competition, consumer choice, and greater opportunities for developers worldwide. The outcome of Epic's persistent battle against Apple's app store monopoly could redefine how developers interact with consumers digitally, signifying potentially monumental changes yet to come.

But for now, as anticipation brews within the gaming community and developers alike, it's evident the road to equality within the digital marketplace remains paved with challenges yet to overcome.
