Former Intelligence Chief Arrested In Kadambari Case

The arrest of PSR Anjaneyulu raises questions about police conduct during YSRCP's tenure

A significant development has emerged in the sensational Kadambari Jethwani case, which drew widespread attention during the previous YSR Congress Party administration in Andhra Pradesh. PSR Anjaneyulu, a senior Indian Police Service officer who then served as Intelligence Chief, was arrested today in Hyderabad by the Andhra Pradesh police. He is reportedly being transferred to Vijayawada.

Responding to the arrest, Andhra Pradesh Assembly Deputy Speaker Raghurama Krishnam Raju expressed satisfaction, stating, “I felt happy after watching the news on TV this morning.” Raghurama Krishnam Raju alleged that PSR Anjaneyulu was involved in several unethical activities during the tenure of the Jaganmohan Reddy-led government as the Intelligence Chief. “Whenever Jagan beckoned, this man would rush to him,” Raghurama Krishnam Raju said in strong criticism. He further alleged that PSR Anjaneyulu played a central role not only in the Kadambari Jethwani case but also in the assault case filed by Raghurama Krishnam Raju himself. He recalled that PSR Anjaneyulu was listed as Accused No. 2 (A2) in the assault case filed against those who attacked him.

Raghurama Krishnam Raju claimed that another Indian Police Service officer, PV Sunil Kumar, was also involved in the conspiracy behind the assault against him. He alleged that both officers had jointly strategized the attack. Raghurama Krishnam Raju questioned whether PV Sunil Kumar, who is also facing allegations in the same case, would be arrested like PSR Anjaneyulu. He expressed dissatisfaction that, until now, PV Sunil Kumar had not even been summoned for questioning. He described the pace of the investigation into his case as extremely slow—"moving at the speed of a road roller"—but expressed confidence that once the investigation picks up pace, it would not stop.

Raghurama Krishnam Raju also mentioned that a man named Sunil Naik, who filed a suo motu case against him, has been refusing to come from Bihar to testify. He added that a doctor accused of tampering with medical reports in his case is already under investigation. He voiced hope that the arrest of PSR Anjaneyulu would expedite the investigation into his own case.

On April 21, 2025, Senior IPS officer and former Intelligence chief PSR Anjaneyulu was arrested by Andhra Pradesh Crime Investigation Department (CID) officials in Hyderabad in connection with a harassment case filed by Mumbai-based actress Kadambari Jethwani. Anjaneyulu, currently under suspension, is being brought to Vijayawada for further questioning. His arrest marks a key development in the probe into the controversial actions taken during the previous YSRCP regime. Anjaneyulu served as Intelligence Chief under former Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy and was known to be closely associated with the former administration.

According to CID officials, he is the second accused in the case, which also involves suspended IPS officers Kanti Rana Tata and Vishal Gunni. The complaint was lodged by Jethwani after the new coalition government assumed power. Jethwani alleges she and her family were falsely implicated in a fabricated land dispute, allegedly orchestrated by YSRCP leaders. A complaint filed by K Vidyasagar—reportedly a YSRCP aide—claimed Jethwani forged documents and sold his property. Acting on this, the police arrested Jethwani and her parents in Mumbai and transferred them to judicial custody in Vijayawada.

CID sources claim Anjaneyulu played a central role in framing the charges and planning the arrest, allegedly under instructions from the then political leadership. Following Sunday’s arrest, CID officials transported Anjaneyulu to their Vijayawada office, along with key documents seized during the operation. He is expected to face detailed interrogation regarding his alleged involvement. The arrest of a high-ranking IPS officer in a politically sensitive case has intensified scrutiny over police conduct during the YSRCP tenure.

Officials stated that the investigation is ongoing and further action, including arrests, remains possible. In a separate development, Anjaneyulu has been booked by the Guntur CID police station for allegedly threatening Andhra Pradesh Government Employees Association President KR Suryanarayana with a firearm.

On April 22, 2025, the Crime Investigation Department (CID) police arrested former Intelligence Director-General P. Sitarama Anjaneyulu in Bollywood actress Kadambari Jethwani’s harassment case and questioned him for about five hours. The AP CID police took Mr. Sitarama Anjaneyulu into custody from his residence at Hyderabad earlier in the day and immediately shifted him to the CID office in Vijayawada.

Following a complaint lodged by Ms. Kadambari with the Ibrahimpatnam police in September last year, the police registered a case against Kukkala Vidyasagar, then Intelligence Director-General P.S.R. Anjaneyulu, Vijayawada Police Commissioner Kanthi Rana Tata, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP Law and Order) Vishal Gunni, West Zone Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) K. Hanumantha Rao and Ibrahimpatnam Circle Inspector M. Satyanarayana and others. The complainant alleged that the police officers colluded with Mr. Vidyasagar, foisted a false case against her and arrested them illegally and harassed her family members.

The police asked Mr. Sitarama Anjaneyulu on whose directions the police acted in the Kadambari’s case, why they registered the case without verifying the facts, why the police did not follow the rules, who brought pressure on investigation officers in the case and other issues. The questioning continued in the CID office till late in the night, when the reports last came in. “The CID police searched the house of Mr. Sitarama Anjaneyulu in Hyderabad. He will be produced in a court in Vijayawada after a thorough questioning,” a police officer said.

Following a complaint lodged by Mr. Kukkala Vidyasagar, of Krishna district, the Vijayawada Commissionerate Police allegedly booked a false case against the Bollywood actress and her family members. The Ibrahimpatnam police picked up the actress and her parents from Mumbai in February 2024, brought them to Vijayawada and produced them in a court, which remanded them in judicial custody.

Jethwani alleged that the police tried to pressure her into withdrawing a sexual assault case she had filed against an industrialist close to YS Jagan Mohan Reddy. Anjaneyulu, who was close to former chief minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, was already suspended for his involvement in the case, along with two of his colleagues, Kranti Rana Tata, the former Vijayawada police commissioner, and Vishal Gunni, former deputy commissioner. They were accused of wrongful arrest of the actor and harassment faced by her family without any investigation or evidence. All three were suspended by incumbent Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu in September last year after the DGP submitted his report.

Jethwani and her family were arrested in Mumbai before being brought to Vijayawada. She spent 40 days in prison after a film producer and YSRCP leader KVR Vidyasagar filed a complaint of cheating, forgery, and extortion against her. The actor had alleged that the case against her was fabricated and politically motivated. She filed a complaint of criminal conspiracy after the coalition government came to power and named the police officers involved. Subsequently, the CID took up the case. Anjaneyulu, who wielded immense clout in the YSRCP regime, was one of the key officers who framed the charges against her and planned the arrest.

TDP MLA D Narendra Kumar said, “PSR Anjaneyalu acted as ‘YSR’ Anjaneyalu with arrogance of authority. His arrest proves no one is above the law. We’ve seen how he misused power to harass not only TDP leaders but also common people and women who differed with him by weaponizing his role as ACB DG and intelligence chief in false cases.” Meanwhile, the YSRCP accused Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu of vindictive politics. Party spokesperson Ambati Rambabu accused him of targeting a respected IPS officer for his role in Naidu’s arrest in the skill development scam. He added that the arrests were being made to divert people’s attention from the failures of the administration.
