Forest Fire Continues To Rage Near Oshu City

Firefighters struggle to contain flames as mayhem ensues over 100 hectares of forest.

On February 26, 2025, a significant forest fire erupted near the Ooshuyama area of Oshu City, Japan, initially sparked by the burning of dry grass. Despite the diligent efforts of local firefighters and the Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSDF), the fire continues to burn as of March 1, fanning westward and threatening the surrounding forest.

According to reports from the Oshu City Fire Department, as of 5:30 PM on February 28, approximately 100 hectares have been consumed by flames. The fire, which is primarily spreading through the forest, has shut down access to nearby roads and endangered local wildlife. Despite the scale of destruction, no injuries have been reported, though one vacant house has been completely destroyed by the flames.

The circumstances surrounding the fire suggest it may have erupted when the property manager of nearby housing decided to burn cut grass and branches. This practice is common during the dry season, but it has proven hazardous due to current conditions. Throughout the prefecture, authorities have issued dry weather warnings prompting local law enforcement to advise residents to take extreme care when handling fire-related activities.

Firefighting efforts ramped up significantly on March 1 at around 8 AM, combining aerial and ground strategies to combat the wildfire. Reports indicate the participation of three helicopters—two from the prefecture and one from the JSDF—working to control the flames from above. Meanwhile, more than 100 personnel from both the JSDF and local fire services are executing ground operations to extinguish the blaze and monitor for potential flare-ups.

“Firefighters have reported approximately 100 hectares impacted as of 5:30 PM on the 28th,” said the Oshu City Fire Department, emphasizing the urgency of the situation. Their efforts are supported by local authorities who are actively managing evacuation protocols. The community center has been opened as an evacuation site, but fortunately, there have been no evacuations as of now, indicating the immediate community remains safe so far.

City officials reiterated the importance of monitoring the situation closely, ensuring residents stay informed and prepared. “Currently, the nearby community center has been opened as an evacuation center, but no evacuations have taken place,” remarked Oshu City officials, reflecting the hope to manage the fire without necessitating mass evacuations.

Given the current conditions of dry weather across the entirety of Yamanashi Prefecture, local police and fire departments are urging the community to exercise caution. “Local police are cautioning residents to handle fires carefully due to statewide dry conditions,” reported local law enforcement, highlighting the necessity of vigilance among residents now and going forward.

Despite their best efforts, firefighters remain vigilant about managing the fire’s spread as they coordinate on-the-ground firefighting maneuvers with aerial support. The fire’s progression continues to be monitored, and officials will provide updates as conditions evolve, assessing the effectiveness of their strategies to contain the environmental disaster.

With the combination of ground and aerial teams actively working on the fire, officials aim to quell the flames and protect not just the homes and properties at risk, but also the beautiful woodlands and wildlife inherent to the area, remaining hopeful for good news as weather conditions persist and the right preparations are secured.

The Oshu City Forest Fire serves as not only a pressing environmental concern but also brings awareness to the importance of preventive measures during dry seasons—serving as both a call-to-action for community caution and resilience amid disaster responses.
