Foreign Influence Looms Over 2024 Presidential Race

Global powers weigh their bets as Trump and Harris vie for the Oval Office

The race for the White House is heating up as the 2024 U.S. presidential election approaches, and it’s proving to be anything but typical. With former President Donald Trump and current Vice President Kamala Harris as the main contenders, foreign interference and influence have once again taken center stage, echoing the turbulent atmosphere of past elections.

The stakes are high, and the world is watching closely, with various countries openly expressing support for their preferred candidate. A recent indictment by the Justice Department has charged three Iranian hackers linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) with infiltrations aimed at Trump’s campaign, showcasing the global dimensions of this electoral battle.

On January 31, the Justice Department unveiled the indictment involving Masoud Jalili, Seyyed Ali Aghamiri, and Yasar Balaghi, who are alleged to have executed hacking missions against the Trump campaign as part of a scheme to send sensitive information to Biden’s campaign. The indictment reveals the hackers utilized fake online personas to interact with key figures within the Trump campaign, targeting individuals including government officials and journalists.

Attorney General Merrick Garland reaffirmed the U.S. position, stating, “The message of the U.S. government is clear: the American people, not foreign powers, decide the outcome of our country’s elections.” The high-profile nature of these charges has raised alarms about the potential for foreign meddling, as similar tactics were seen during the 2016 election.

Former U.S. Ambassador to Israel, David Friedman, noted he had been warned about hacking attempts during his term, underscoring the need for vigilance as the election nears. The evidence presented suggests the hacking operation commenced soon after Trump’s controversial airstrike on IRGC Qassem Soleimani, indicating the timeliness of these actions.

While Iran’s actions came to light, Russia's involvement has also surfaced as Vice President Putin made lighthearted comments about wanting to see Harris win, indicating Moscow’s strategic interests tied to U.S. political outcomes. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov later downplayed those claims, calling them humor and underscoring the ambiguity of Russia’s stance.

During the race, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has also positioned himself, rallying U.S. support against Russian aggression. His recent visit to the United States, seen by many as politically motivated, has drawn criticism from Republican leaders who accuse his administration of meddling in American electoral politics. House Speaker Mike Johnson has demanded accountability, asking for investigations surrounding Zelenskyy’s trip and the potential misuse of U.S. funds to influence the election.

The turbulent relationships between these nations highlight differing agendas: While Democrats, under Biden and Harris, have pushed extensive military aid to Ukraine, Trump’s approach has been questioned, making the stakes for Ukraine exceedingly high depending on who prevails.

China, too, is said to play its part with intelligence officials warning about its attempts to utilize artificial intelligence for deceptive content creation aimed at U.S. voters. With evidence pointing to deliberate efforts by China to engage with American electoral processes through propaganda and misinformation, officials are on high alert. Secretary of State Antony Blinken remarked on the commitment from Xi Jinping not to interfere, yet actions tell another story.

The narratives surrounding the candidates are also distinctly foreign-centric. Trump’s previous favorable comments about Putin reflect his political inclinations, which may have dire consequences for the Ukraine conflict and U.S.-Russia relations if he returns to office. Meanwhile, the Harris campaign endeavors to strengthen military support for Ukraine, presenting her as the more reliable option amid global turmoil.

With interferences from Iran, Russia, Ukraine, and China all influencing the race, many voters are left pondering: how much does foreign opinion and involvement really shape American democracy? These dynamics present challenges not just for voters but for the legitimate functioning of U.S. electoral processes.

Polls indicate it’s set to be another tight race, with reports showing Harris currently hovering around 54% chance of victory and Trump at 45%. Just as the race played out closely during the 2016 election, the potential for another nail-biter invigorates speculation on voter turnout and public sentiment.

The complexity of global relationships intertwined with the presidential race speaks to the broader impacts and future ramifications. With November quickly approaching, the U.S. electorate remains at the crossroads, weighing not only personal preferences but the perceived international consequences of their choice.

With foreign powers eyeing the election, the American people's sovereignty to choose their leaders faces unprecedented external scrutiny. The upcoming election is not only about the candidates but about maintaining the integrity of the democratic process itself.

It’s not just about who will win the Oval Office – it’s about who influences the conversations, narratives, and decisions worldwide. Only time will reveal how these international dynamics will reshape the electoral map, but one thing is clear: this election is about more than just the economy, health care, or foreign policy. It’s about national sovereignty and the ability of Americans to weigh the balance of power both domestically and internationally.

The outcomes of the 2024 elections may well redefine foreign relations for years to come, making it imperative for the American public to engage critically and vote wisely as outside influences loom larger than ever.
