The former Barcelona star and Peruvian football icon is remembered for his monumental contributions to the sport.

The world of FC Barcelona is mourning the loss of Hugo Sotil, who passed away on December 30, 2024, at the age of 75 after being hospitalized for 11 days due to health complications. Known affectionately as ‘Cholo’, Sotil is remembered as one of the club’s iconic figures, having made significant contributions during his time with the team.

Sotil, born on May 18, 1949, in Ica, Peru, was celebrated for his exceptional skills on the field. He joined Barcelona from Municipal de Lima during the 1973-74 season, making history as the first foreign player to be signed by the Catalan club. His arrival marked the beginning of Barcelona's resurgence as he played pivotal roles alongside legends like Johan Cruyff, contributing to the team’s first league title after a 14-year drought.

During his debut season, Sotil became instrumental, playing all matches of the legendary 1973-74 La Liga campaign and scoring 11 goals, positioning himself among the top scorers for the club alongside Cruyff and Marcial. FC Barcelona commemorated his impactful career with heartfelt tributes, stating, “Sotil stole the hearts of ‘culé’ fans and was the synonym of spectacle on the field.” They reminisced about his notable contributions and the legendary moments he created at Camp Nou, where fans would chant “Cholooo, Cholooo” during matches.

One of the most touching moments shared by the club involved Sotil calling his mother to celebrate the title win on April 7, 1974, exclaiming, “¡Mamita, campeonamos!” which translates to “Mom, we are champions!” This heartfelt connection highlighted his deep roots and emotional ties, which fans always cherished.

Despite facing challenges, including issues obtaining dual nationality after Johan Neeskens joined the team, Sotil made his return to competitive football and continued to be recognized as one of the best South American players of his time. After leaving Barcelona in 1976, Sotil returned to his native Peru, where he joined Alianza Lima and continued to shine, winning two national titles and becoming part of the club’s rich history.

At Alianza Lima, he left his mark by scoring 30 goals, aiding the club to two championships during his tenure. Notably, he played during one of Alianza’s most memorable international campaigns, reaching the semifinals of the prestigious Copa Libertadores in 1978. His talent and leadership undeniably left a legacy, earning him status as one of the club’s greats.

Throughout his career, Sotil also had tremendous success with the Peruvian national team, participating in two World Cup events and winning the Copa América title in 1975. His contribution to the national team solidified his legacy, as he remains one of the country’s most revered athletes.

The news of his passing prompted heartfelt tributes from fans, colleagues, and clubs, highlighting the significant impact he had on Peruvian and international football. FC Barcelona extended condolences, stating, “We express our deepest sorrow for the passing of Hugo Sotil, whose contribution to our history will never be forgotten.” Similarly, Alianza Lima recognized him as “one of our great legends” and extended sympathies to his family and friends.

Despite the brevity of his time at Barcelona, Sotil’s legacy as one of the club’s cherished players continues to resonate with fans today. His flair and contributions not only helped catalyze Barcelona’s resurgence but also left indelible marks across the world of football, making him a celebrated figure among generations.
