Flash Flood Warning Issued For Tehama County

Heavy rainfall raises severe flooding risks as residents urged to prepare for evacuations.

SACRAMENTO, CA – A flash flood warning remains in effect for Tehama County’s Park Fire burn scar following heavy rainfall, with the National Weather Service (NWS) reporting alarming conditions for local residents. Issued at 2:51 AM Tuesday, the warning is active until 5:45 AM, and it is accompanied by serious advice from the NWS.

According to the NWS, "Flooding of areas in and around the Tehama County Division of the Park Fire Burn Scar. This is a life threatening situation. Heavy rainfall will cause extensive and severe flash flooding of creeks, streams and ditches." Residents can expect relentless downpours, with projections of up to 1.5 inches of rain per hour, leading to increased risks of rock, mud, and vegetation debris moving downstream at alarming speeds.

Localities such as Paynes Creek, Mill Creek, and Rock Creek are under significant threat, facing debris flows and possible evacuations as officials urge those near the burn scar to remain vigilant and prepared. Such measures are not just precautionary; they are imperative for safety as conditions can change rapidly. "If you encounter flood waters, climb to safety," the NWS advised, emphasizing the life-threatening nature of the situation.

Officials remind residents to monitor alerts and updates from both the NWS and local emergency services. For those living or traveling through affected areas, particularly along State Route 36, it's advised to stay alert for debris and flooded roads.

"Flooding is particularly hazardous during heavy rainfall, especially for low-lying or flood-prone areas," stressed officials as they provided safety tips. These include moving to higher ground if advised to evacuate and ensuring homes are secured before leaving. Residents should disconnect utilities and be wary about entering spaces where water coats electrical outlets or cords.

The extended forecast suggests gradual clearing of the storm by later Tuesday, with Sacramento expecting some relief as partly sunny skies return by Christmas Day. Temperatures are predicted to reach 58 degrees during the day, dipping to 41 overnight as winds remain moderate but could pick up at times.

While the emergency persists, it's pivotal for everyone to heed safety protocols during this severe weather. Recommendations for staying safe during floods include never driving through floodwaters, as even seemingly shallow water can disrupt vehicle control. The NWS warned, "It only takes 6 inches of moving water to knock you off your feet," and as little as 12 inches of fast-flowing water can sweep away most cars.

The risk of hydroplaning exacerbates the situation, particularly when drivers do not adjust their speed to wet conditions. It's important to maintain headlights during rainfall, adhere to middle lanes, and keep distance from larger vehicles which can obscure visibility.

A gradual warming trend may arrive by Saturday, with temperatures expected to climb back to the upper 50s, bringing more favorable conditions for holiday travel. Meanwhile, NWS Sacramento continues to keep close tabs on the storm's development, urging constant vigilance.

For now, teeter on the edge of safety; the consequences of ignoring the warnings can be grave. Emergency protocols remain in effect, and it’s up to each individual to not only protect themselves but to also stay informed. Make sure to follow reliable sources for the latest updates and outcomes from this hazardous weather event.
