Finance Minister Calls For International Unity To Support Lebanon

Yassin Jaber emphasizes urgent need for aid and reconstruction amidst ongoing Israeli tension and U.S. aid concerns.

On March 18, 2025, Finance Minister Yassin Jaber underscored the necessity for enhanced international cooperation to halt Israeli aggressions and support Lebanon's reconstruction efforts. Jaber called for more substantial pressure from global bodies and the United Nations to ensure stability in southern Lebanon, stressing the importance of empowering the Lebanese army alongside peacekeeping forces.

During a meeting with UN Resident Coordinator Omer Riza, Jaber stated, "We need to intensify our efforts to ensure international pressure on Israel to cease its aggressions and enable UN peacekeeping forces to operate effectively in southern Lebanon." His comments highlighted the urgency of a unified approach to addressing ongoing tensions in the region and the return of displaced families.

Jaber's discussions with Riza revolved around coordinating financial assistance for Lebanon, focusing on essential sectors such as health and education. Riza noted that the UN is preparing to launch a new fundraising campaign aimed at supporting reconstruction projects across Lebanon. He emphasized, "We are launching a new funding campaign to support Lebanon’s rebuilding efforts, particularly in health and education," reflecting the need for concerted efforts to respond to the humanitarian crisis.

However, concerns loom over the recent suspension of U.S. aid, which could impact Lebanon's recovery plans. Riza remarked, "The suspension of U.S. aid could negatively impact our budget and recovery plans," raising alarms about the potential financing shortfalls facing Lebanese institutions. This backdrop of uncertainty adds to Jaber’s demands for immediate international collaboration and support.

Moreover, in a series of meetings, Jaber consulted with Health Minister Rakan Nasser El-Din to address pressing healthcare needs. El-Din outlined the financial requirements for public hospitals to maintain operational integrity, particularly in light of international loans from the World Bank and Islamic Bank that can provide crucial support.

In another meeting with Deputy Fride Bustani, discussions focused on necessary banking legislation that impacts depositors' funds—specifically, Jaber's insights into reform proposals relevant to recovering Lebanon's economic stability. These conversations not only addressed legislative needs but highlighted the urgency for expediting processes to stabilize the banking sector and restore confidence among the populace.

Amidst these discussions, Jaber reaffirmed his commitment to prioritizing health services. He assured El-Din, "I will not hesitate to secure support for the health sector, and this issue is a priority for me in discussions with both lenders and donors." His emphasis on health illustrates a recognition of the necessity for a robust medical infrastructure as part of Lebanon's recovery trajectory.

As the situation evolves, the integration of aid, legislative action, and inter-ministerial cooperation emerges as essential for rebuilding Lebanon's infrastructure and restoring its economy. The push for effective international collaboration remains critical, particularly amid fears of dwindling support in light of shifting international priorities.

The path forward hinges on addressing these multifaceted challenges, as Jaber's consultations reflect a broader strategy aimed at fostering resilience and solidarity within Lebanon. Continued dialogue among government officials, health authorities, and international partners will be vital to navigating these complex dynamics and ensuring the safety and wellbeing of the Lebanese people.
