On March 19, 2025, Dr. Hassan Al-Noamani, President of Sohag University, announced a remarkable achievement for the institution in global research classifications. The university now ranks 21st among 54 Egyptian research institutions, according to the latest results from the Nature Index, which evaluates research output and collaboration.
In addition to its impressive national ranking, Sohag University secured the 15th position amongst 31 Egyptian universities—both government and private—highlighting the institution's significant strides in supporting scientific research and enhancing its academic reputation.
Globally, Sohag University achieved a ranking of 5168th out of 18853 research institutions worldwide, alongside a position of 2746th among 5228 academic institutions. These rankings reflect the university's commitment to advancing its research capabilities and establishing itself as a reputable academic leader.
Dr. Al-Noamani emphasized the importance of international research collaborations at the university, noting that the rate of international cooperation reached 88.6%. Conversely, local research cooperation stood at 11.4%, which underscores the university's determination to expand its global partnerships to boost the quality of scientific research produced.
The rankings themselves derive from assessments of various research sectors, where Sohag University also made significant marks: it was placed 13th in health sciences and 10th in physical sciences among Egyptian research institutions. Dr. Al-Noamani expressed his pride in these figures, suggesting they reflect the evolving quality of research output across different scientific disciplines.
"This achievement enhances the research position of Sohag University and reflects its ongoing efforts to develop scientific research and international cooperation," stated Dr. Al-Noamani, emphasizing the university's strategic direction and priorities moving forward.
Furthermore, Dr. Amr Abdel Hamid, Director of the Scientific Publishing Center at the university, outlined the significance of the Nature Index. "Nature Index is one of the most important tools for measuring research performance of institutions, focusing on evaluating scientific output based on the number of published articles in prestigious journals across five major fields: biological sciences, chemistry, earth and environmental sciences, health sciences, and physical sciences," he explained.
He also noted that the journals considered for classification are selected based on their reputation by a stable group of researchers. This ensures the reliability of the index's assessments, which are updated regularly to reflect the latest developments in research over the last 12 months.
The rankings serve not only as an acknowledgment of the university’s achievements but also as motivation for its researchers. Sohag University recognizes the importance of publishing in reputable journals and actively supports its academics in this endeavor. Such initiatives play a crucial role in enhancing the university's standing both locally and internationally.
The continuous support from university leadership and the commitment to fostering a vibrant research environment signify an optimistic future for Sohag University. As it aims to further its academic contributions and establish strong international links, the university's role in advancing scientific research and training future professionals in various fields remains unwavering.
With the latest results from the Nature Index illuminating its growing prominence, Sohag University is poised to make even more significant contributions to the academic community and beyond in the years to come.
