Filming Of Movie 'Zhemchug' Concludes With International Flair

The family drama explores themes of guardianship and resilience through vibrant storytelling.

Filming of the family drama Zhemchug has officially concluded, marking the completion of one of the first collaborative Russian-Indian film projects. Directed by Tina Barkalaya, Zhemchug is set to explore the intimate dynamics of family and the challenges surrounding guardianship.

The film tells the story of Roman and Elena Mukhin, who decide to adopt 11-year-old Marta after visiting her at an orphanage supported by the large metal company where Roman works. Facing difficulties within their marriage, the couple hopes Marta’s arrival will bring them closer together. The situation becomes more complicated as Marta, who has a strong personality and is unwilling to leave her hometown of Khanty-Mansiysk because of her grandmother's presence, causes additional strains on the parents’ relationship.

After moving to Moscow, it becomes evident the transition is far from smooth. To strengthen their family unit, Roman and Elena make the poignant decision to travel to India, the country Marta has always dreamed of visiting. Their adventurous quest aims to rekindle the family’s bond, bringing to light significant questions about acceptance and belonging.

Filming took place over approximately two months across diverse locations, including the snowy landscapes of Khanty-Mansiysk and the colorful streets of Delhi. With the production team working tirelessly on-site, the film aims to weave together cultural elements from both nations. "Over the two filming months, we were able to live a whole life filled with absolutely different colors: from snowy Khanty-Mansiysk to the colorful Delhi. The change of images once again indicates our film is a big world, full of music, dances, and soul," said Barkalaya, reflecting on the vivid experiences captured on film.

The cast features acclaimed artists from both countries, including Svetlana Khodchenkova, Evgeny Tsyganov, Sergei Gilev, Irina Pegova, Era Ziganshina, and Daria Poluneyeva. Their performances are expected to resonate deeply with audiences, effectively portraying the film’s themes of guardianship and family challenges. The unique collaboration has resulted not only in cultural exchange but also motivated stars from Russian cinema to share the screen with their Indian counterparts. The synergy was exemplified during scenes filmed at the Taj Mahal, where it is reported Russian actors participated alongside Indian actors in traditional dance sequences.

General Producer Ekaterina Filippova expressed enthusiasm about the project’s importance, stating, "We are pleased to be developing international cooperation in film production through this first official co-production. Despite the serious and socially relevant themes addressed, the incorporation of vibrant colors and dance was seamlessly integrated, making the film compelling and engaging for viewers. We believe this will draw attention to the themes of guardianship and adoption."

Scheduled for release in autumn 2025, Zhemchug aims to premiere first in Russia before making its way to Indian cinemas. The ambitious project is backed by Pan-Atlantic Studio and the Indian company Karitina Entertainment, with support from the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation and the Civil and Social Initiatives Center of Yugra Fund.

Both audiences and creators are excited about the prospects of watching Zhemchug on the big screen, as it not only promises thought-provoking content but also highlights the beauty of cultural collaboration, allowing for stories and experiences to be shared across borders.
