Christmas Carols Top Playlist For German Drivers This Season

Survey reveals 'Last Christmas' leads the chart as favorite holiday tune among motorists

Christmas carols have become almost synonymous with the festive season, especially for drivers cruising through the holiday spirit on Germany's roads. A recent survey conducted by the online platform Autoscout24 revealed intriguing insights about which tunes resonate most with German motorists during December.

With Christmas fast approaching, it’s clear certain elements are staples of the season: Advent calendars, festive baked goods, and, of course, the Christmas tree. While people can forgo some holiday traditions, one thing most drivers agree on is the joy of belting out Christmas carols en route. According to the survey, 87% of Germans listen to or sing Christmas carols at least occasionally when driving, illustrating the deep-rooted love for these tunes during the festive season.

Interestingly, the survey results indicate a noticeable preference for English-language Christmas songs among German drivers. The standout favorite is none other than the iconic “Last Christmas” by Wham, released back in 1984. This perennial classic secured 44% of participant votes, positioning it firmly at the top of the popularity scale. Notably, the survey presented twelve songs for selection, split evenly between German and English tracks. And the results paint a telling picture: traditional German songs trail significantly behind their English counterparts.

Following “Last Christmas” are several other beloved hits, cementing the dominance of international classics on Germany’s airwaves, particularly during the holiday season. Songs like “Feliz Navidad,” “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” and “Driving Home for Christmas” capture the festive spirit and rank among the top four favorites. English holiday classics, including “Jingle Bell Rock,” “Let It Snow,” “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” and “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” fill out the middle ranks, making it clear: English is the main language of Christmas music for many Germans.

The results prompted reflection on the engagement levels of various demographics, particularly families. Interestingly, 89% of drivers with children reported listening to and singing Christmas carols, compared to 85% of those without kids. This heightened interest among families is noteworthy. Among families, more than 60% reported singing or listening to the German classic “Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht,” with 58% favoring “O Tannenbaum.” The increased engagement highlights how Christmas music transforms car rides with children, turning them from mundane journeys to joyful sing-alongs.

Gender disparities also emerge from the survey. Female drivers reportedly sing along to Christmas carols more often than their male counterparts, with 64% of women engaging compared to only 47% of men. It suggests women may bring more festive spirit to driving during the holiday season, contributing to the overall buoyant atmosphere of the end-of-year travels.

While singing along to these holiday classics is largely seen as harmless fun, enthusiasm for Christmas decorations inside the car, on the other hand, should be tempered by practicality. Not everything festive is allowed when it concerns safety and legality on the roads, reminding drivers to be mindful of how they visually represent the season.

Through all these factors, the survey by Autoscout24 underlines the cultural significance of Christmas music, with English-language songs undeniably leading the pack. Their popularity speaks volumes about changing tastes and the inevitable blending of cultures during the holidays. German drivers embrace these festive tunes—it’s evident they serve as the soundtrack to their yuletide journeys, enhancing enjoyment, and creating cherished memories on the road.

So, as another festive season approaches, grasp your steering wheel, tune your radio to one of the many holiday stations, and join the chorus of “Last Christmas” or “Feliz Navidad” filling the air of German cars. It appears this year, just like the last, the tradition of singing carols will be just as strong, creating connections among families and friends, uniting them with joy as they traverse the streets draped with sparkling lights.
