Fem van Empel delivered another stunning performance at the Cyclo-cross World Cup event held on Boxing Day, dominating the muddy course of Gavere, Belgium. This victory marked her seventh win of the winter season, solidifying her status as the leading figure in women’s cyclo-cross.
The Dutch world champion showcased her exceptional fitness and strategy by breaking away from her competitors early on during the race. While Ceylin del Carmen Alvarado, another top contender, did not compete, van Empel’s formidable rivals included Lucinda Brand, Puck Pieterse, and Blanka Kata Vas. All failed to keep pace with the 22-year-old as she surged to victory.
“I trusted my form of the last few weeks and there was nothing wrong with it,” van Empel shared shortly after crossing the finish line. Despite having faced knee issues recently, which caused her to miss several races, she felt prepared to tackle the challenging course. “This feels really good. I haven't been able to do much the past few days, but I'm super happy with this victory on this beautiful course,” she reflected.
The race unfolded with van Empel taking the lead by the end of the initial lap, along with Pieterse closely trailing behind. Van Empel's strategic prowess came to the forefront as she gradually extended her lead. After lap two, she broke away with clear intent, relying on her strength on the course's tricky ascents and mud-laden descents, which proved treacherous for other competitors.
Conditions during the race were particularly harsh, marked by persistent mud and greasy terrain, but van Empel utilized her exceptional handling skills to carve out her advantage. “Every win is very important, but the last days were not easy for me,” she noted, highlighting both the physical and mental challenges she overcame en route to victory.
Behind her, Brand and Pieterse engaged in heated competition, with Brand eventually claiming second place after battling back from losing time earlier in the race. Pieterse, who struggled with balance and fell during the race, finished third. After the podium placements were settled, Brand remarked on her steady performance throughout the race, signaling her continued lead in the overall World Cup standings.
Gavere's course has historically challenged racers with its demanding terrain, making van Empel's victory even more significant. Just last year, she experienced disappointment as her winning streak came to an end at this same venue, underscoring the importance of this triumph as she asserted her resolve and ability to bounce back after setbacks.
While van Empel celebrated with her team and fans, the day wasn't solely about individual accolades. Other racers were also making headlines, with Marianne Vos expected to return to competition at the upcoming World Cup round, and Alvarado preparing to rejoin the field after her absence.
“For now, yes, the running part was also good, so I'm happy,” Van Empel concluded, reflecting on the importance of this win not only as a personal achievement but also as affirmation of her health after injury concerns. News of her recuperation was welcomed by fans, as she is set to face increasingly tough competition, especially as the season progresses and more prominent names re-enter the fray.
This powerful performance continues to signal van Empel's resilience and skill set against the backdrop of cyclo-cross racing’s top competition. With the next event scheduled for January 2, 2025, all eyes are on van Empel to see if she can maintain this momentum and continue her streak of victories.
